I certainly think they could make an album that most fans would love
Its probably not realistic or fair to expect anyone over 35 to write a great rock song. But like I've said on the raotw remix threads, I don't think the FF need a great song to make great music
We've recently seen proof that the four still have a special chemistry
So yeah, I think they are very capable of making an album that most fans would be delighted with

Given they all have clear heads nowadays, if Frame actually set himself the challenge of an old style rock album ( ie tinges of country, but no pop), with Bob Young, and Andy limited to piano and Hammond only I believe they could create something astounding. Something that would amaze themselves. They'd need to go into it like Sabbath did with 13, with the full intention of making a classic old style album. Look at the result of 13. Maybe a producer who got this purpose (like Rick Rubin) could drive them to do it (yes I know about his lack of dynamics on 13) - insisting on vintage gear only. The FF will not have forgotten how to ride bikes, nor how to write rock - especially with clear heads. But I am afraid (no insult meant to Rhino here) that Rhino would have to be nowhere near it - despite him writing the rockier Quo songs of late - as I recall he didn't even like early Quo - nor any modern timekeeper rock drummer - it would have to be Nuff and Spud. But yes, I believe they could still blow most modern acts out of the studio - because they have something that transcends triple rectifiers and ultra distortion and double kick pedals - they have the Piledriver sound. I stopped reading when I hit that. |

Claudie is OK by me. As is Slow Train. Quo's full of country. Keep your 'tinges' of Country to yourself. I here zero Country in that song. Country influences are all over their best work. I hate country by and large, but small bits here and there, like Quo had, can be great. |

Regrettably, I think expectation is too high, it just couldn't be great in the same way the 70's run of albums just WERE. We've become too fickle in this day and age.
Have they the potential though? - DEFINITELY!

I would like to think so, especially as Rick thinks Alan is still writing songs as if he was stuck in the 70's . Only worry would be that their last few albums togethor started the slide that I just didn't recover from. This resulted in at least a 25 year period where I just lost all intertest and didn't listen to any of their output at all.

Yes they could and as far as I'm concerned they should get on with doing one before it's too late. I've supported the post 1985 Quo through records and gigs and have nothing against them at all, for me most of the RTYD, UTI, HT, ISOTFC and QPQ albums were great, BUT it's the FF boys who I'd really like to see live again and hear on any new studio Quo record. I think having the mix of the 3 lead vocals could be a big plus. Yes I love that 1970-1981 period and the reunion gigs were great, but I wouldn't expect them to record like for like, as many of us point out at times, Dog was different to Ma Kelly, Hello to Piledriver, On The Level to Quo etc. I think for me I'm looking for a more blues rock focus overall and longer soloing from Rossi than we have seen from post 1985. I ain't got no problem with a country tinged rock track and a slower softer track on a 10-11 track album full of quality rockers. Blackberry Smoke one of the better examples of how you can do slightly commercial heavy and raw sounding country based rock music, (any future country based solo album from Rossi take note). It's in the writing, we know they can play, it's just bringing it together, not easy and not always going to come up with gems, but they could do it for sure, I believe in them. quorp quofr quojc quoal  |

It may just be Gates that yours and my idea of what is country sounding is just a bit different. I put up with too much of it over here. Especially when I lived in the prairies. A bunch of twangy geeeeetars.
