Interesting find. According to this ' Eltonography' Elton did the backing vocals. Apparently "fans have uncovered over 50 songs that feature Elton's voice" as an uncredited session musician.

It's a sort of hazy memory from the old message board. These 70's covers compilation albums were probably in every home. You used to pick them up cheap in Woolies or supermarkets. For mums and dads who didn't want to spend their hard earned (literally back then) on the real thing. Swinging parties ensued

The 'Top Of The Pops' albums were a staple in our household especially at Xmas. I used to buy them from my first wage packages as a 16-17 year old for my younger sister, though the cover photos were a little bit of mild excitement to my adolescent self.
I thought some of the cover tracks were pretty damn good tbh.
