Quoincidence Sorry mate if my post is annoying you. I didn't know it was a NY thing when I posted, although I've since looked on YT at recent clips of the band and Francis looks the same everywhere. Of course I can see your point of view. But it is a fact that not liking the clip is a common reaction. I think it's to be expected from any fanbase that when the look of the band becomes radically different to when you started following them. My football team play in red. It would still be the same team, club, ground and players if they changed to blue, and by your logic, it would be fine because I don't go to watch the kit I wince when I see the AC album or DS cover. I guess they don't bother you. I can't prove it, but I am certain that they will have lost the band many more 000's of fans than those albums sold. Like I say, I think "image" very much does matter, irrespective of the fact others can't see it. Like you I simply don't think francis sees it (only Alan did, I think). If Francis did see it, he would still have a ponytail (albeit against his wishes) and play a tele...because it's good for business. Francis thinks DS was a big success for the band. I suggest it trashed the brand and shrank the fanbase. (Even the unofficial fanzine full quota threw the towel in. The sight of Quo on telly in suits didn't play well....) Perhaps though we can agree on one thing.... To our mutual astonishment dennis enjoyed it. And who knows...with agent Rafa in charge, perhaps his team will soon be playing in red ?

It's not annoying me, and I don't blame you in the slightest. It's just a thing I find bizarre Could also be put down to the fact I wasn't born until 1997, so the whole image thing isn't important to me. I grew up on the Rich / Edwards & Letley line-ups, so that whole imagery had gone out of the window at that point. When I saw Quo on TV, it was this; I do agree with the whole Don't Stop period being iffy. The suit / blue denim combo, Rhino's bowl cut, Jeff receding perm... It aged the band, and they didn't look "young" again until the whole image change in 2003 for the Heavy Traffic tour.

I don’t know about everyone else but I am enjoying getting older. I’m enjoying my tastes changing, abs the things I take pleasure in and value. I’m enjoying discovering new things. I really no longer want to be the same person I was at 20. Because I’m not. And I won’t want to be the same person at 60 that I was at 40.
I always think when people say things like “I’m the same as I was at school” - what the hell have you done with your life.
Francis just got old. Like we all are

All bands i guess do change their image as they get older or a legacy band. I mean Kiss look ridiculous to me these days. Mick Jagger would look stupid if he wore something from the 1981 tour on their current tour. Metallica do look more casual rock image then what they did in the 80's and 90's but still have the edge of their peak era.
To be fair Rossi would look silly walking out in full denim for a gig as he does not suit that image of Quo anymore.

I define the various incarnations of Status Quo by Francis Rossi's haircut, not his clothes.
The centre parting of Matchstick Men
The long hair of the FF
The pony tail after Live Aid
The shorn locks after he realised long hair and baldness are a bad mix
He matured along the way and that's fine by me.

Things evolve, some for the good, some for the bad, in fairness it's not as bad as the 'Don't Stop' campaign, and that was nearly 30 years back, that was really bad...Cabaret Quo indeed

Quoincidence - Yes I think age will be a big factor. Let me try to explain my reaction to the clip
Rewind to the mid to late 80's. Rain or shine I wore a Quo teeshirt, jeans, painted bikers jacket with cut off denim jacket covered in badges and patches
I even wore a Quo belt! For most of the 80's that's how it was, often with Quo and other heavy bands on the Walkman. Somewhere around 89 I realised what a nob I must have looked and toned it down 😳😁
I was into bootlegs , old merch etc. I spent many hours tracking down calling the shots, took years. Guess I was trying to taste the glory years that I'd missed a decade earlier while simultaneously being horrified at the bands direction
When I look back, through school my friends were all Quo fans. They all dropped off the band at different points. By PR there was only me left
Even though I never actually wore an anorak, to this day I don't understand how I managed to get a girlfriend 🤣
So yeah the image and sound changes horrified me like you wouldn't believe. But for most time since I've loved them live and spent weeks afterwards not being slightly bothered moaning about anything, just happy with what a great time I had
It was the fans with Quo tatooes I felt sorry for most. In the early 80's Quo were touted as the grandads of HM. There was street cred to Quo because of the live power, recognition that the old stuff was brilliant but also the word that the band was still good. Can't tell you how big Quo were around the time of NTL in metal circles, the bands loudest ever tour. Of course they headlined monsters of rock in 82
1982 lost the interest of some of the heavier fans, while BTB demolished it. MT...
I think the main reaction to the changes from fans was just a shrug of "oh they do that now ", and people just moved on. It was probably only the devoted that were upset
A lot of those fans were back again on the reunions. I never saw the band before 86 but I think most of the reunion crowd had. To have seen and felt Quo at the height of their power provided a connection and understanding that the newer fans like me could never have. They are entitled to say that the Quo of later wasn't Quo to them anymore
My horror at the look, eg, of Quo on TOTP doing dreamin was stomach churning. To many fans 10/15 years older than 16 year old me it will have been terrible, no wonder so many hard-core fans walked at the shock. Our bedrooms had been covered in posters of Quo the rock gods, the headbangers whose style had influenced the image of the new wave of 80's metal more than any other band. Look at the Piledriver or BFY sleeve then look at AC and tell me image doesn't matter. Come on, even the fanbase had an image!!!
This thread is not really about what they wear but is more about the legacy and adoration they walked away from. That's probably why the clip made me feel something, I don't know what.
We all felt that adoration in 2013 and 2014, and it was extraordinary. I should be over it but I still find it boggling that they walked away from the fantastic position and fans they had

What rossiwaistcoat says is spot on.
For me the starkest thing was the Rockin Through The Years video that was released in 1987 . About 3 or 4 tracks is in it had the incredible performance of Roll over Lay Down that conveyed so much power menace and attitude and ended with the ridiculous Dreamin and you knew without doubt that in the space of 11 years they had totally blown it both musically and visually.

From RAOTW onward, Quo have systematically deconstructed their own legacy.
They even provided us with their own soundtrack, cruelly releasing the occasional album and track to show they could be great if they wanted.
The Backbone album is closer in sound to RAOTW than RAOTW is to the Blue For You album.
And whilst Backbone and RAOTW are perfectly listenable, neither of them are Piledriver.

I suppose when you analyse it, the Quo image that most of us want to associate with only lasted about 6 years out of a career spanning over 50. A fairly narrow window really. It all began to get smoother and more deliberate after that. The image began to be 'managed'. To be honest, probably as early as Blue For You. Although, as a fan, I was in blissful ignorance. But you learn to see things differently in retrospect as the years progress. It's strange because that rough and ready image (i.e. a la Piledriver) was anything but 'cool' back in the 70's; publicly that is. Whereas now it's the complete opposite. But Vertigo spotted it from the start. Clever people. Does anyone know who took that pic on the front of Piledriver? I'd pay a pretty penny for an original! For me, it is THE coolest image there's ever been. Perceptions and opinions. We all have 'em. I like a sharp suit. I've worn plenty. Do I like it on Quo? Put it this way, I'm less bothered now than I would have been 30 or 40 years ago. In fact, when I think about it, I'm not remotely bothered at all.
