Just can't believe they never performed the song live, in it's entirely.

A genuine classic. I suspect they felt the song was too long to stick it in the set during the Blue For You tour - the full length version that is. It hadn't been butchered for radio airplay at that time. Although that's just a guess really. They'd have played the whole thing in their younger days. The length of a song was academic in the early 70's. In fact, too short was considered uncool But from a personal point of view, it was still fabulous to hear part of the song when they started the medley with it during the "End of the Road" tour. As with Living On An Island, the whole essence of the song - the sheer genius of it - gets lost with the radio friendly version. "Radio edit" is an expression I've grown to loathe over the decades Maybe I need to lighten up

My favourite Quo song and one of my favourite songs full stop. A song which shows what great songwriters, performers and producers they were, and the ultimate rock god start to the video with Rick in his open shirt and the wind machine blowing his hair! Absolutely brilliant!
I played it to a younger mate of mine who isn't too much into Quo (note: loves the Quo album - that album got him into rock at a young age) - he wasn't familiar with the song and he absolutely loved it!

An absolute classic.
Totally agree it needs to be heard in its entirety.
The single version is listed as "The Mystery Song" on the 2005 CD , whilst the album track list just as "Mystery Song".
Prompted me to read all the bumph that came with the album. I had no idea as part of the promo they were advertising hoardings at football matches. Refers to the League Cup Final in 76, so going to check out You Tube to see if I can find it.
Brilliant track , right up there for me.
Edit: Manchester City v Newcastle United if anyone is interested and also want a look.

I've avoided the classic singles during the last 30 years so I didn't tire too much of them, esp as I would be getting them live
As with Rain, the original MS is still amazing to listen to, so pleased I haven't overplayed them this last 30 years or so!
When I hear this, I'm blown away. The live version is so poor in comparison, almost boring sometimes.

A truly great song, and the end of an era. But little did we know Although Wild Side of Life was just round the corner, which was a bit of a clue as opposed to the one-off I hoped it was.

Next to the hang over cure ! Didnt watch the footie I suspect I now know who won though 😂 Newcastle haven't won a trophy - a real trophy that is - since the Fairs Cup in 1969. I remember it all too well coz they knocked Rangers out in the semi-final. I was gutted They haven't won a domestic trophy since the FA Cup in 1955 when they beat - wait for it - Manchester City

Newcastle? Sleeping giant or dozing pygmy? They've been Rip Van Winkle for a long, long time. But Ashley is driving them towards being pigmys. And the 'Big Six' (which includes, erm, Man City!) are determined that they (nor any other team, English footy fans) will ever challenge them again! The Qatari royal family don't want the Saudis involved! Just a brief mention for The Entertainers - we shoulda won the League that year! And a reminder - I am a Newcastle fan!
