As Dennis said earlier the keys and backing vocals, terrible . Probably has one of the worst openings of any Quo song and the that clumsy dum dum dum.
Remove those three things and it's fine.
Oh and that whistley thing.
Remove those four things.

When I was younger, seeing the Rockin' All Through the Years video, seeing this videoclip and always thinking "How this ballad is named Rock 'n' Roll? Where is the Rock 'n' Roll?". My father have the same thought, and we always skip it. Over the years I became sort of not like it, but I can stand it. Those last 4 words sum up how I still feel about R'n'R. S'pose it's kinda being 'damned with faint praise', but I'm afraid I feel about as 'ripped off' now with the 'promise' of the title [vs. what it actually sounded like!] as I did when it was first released [or, 'foisted on us'!!] Agree about the outro solo tho', great stuff there alright!

My very first thoughts when I saw the track listing on the album - it was either a Led Zep cover (?) or their own full tilt boogie onslaught!!! Boy did my expectations quickly evaporate when the slow intro kicked in!!!

It's the keyboards that spoil it for me, sounds a bit fairgroundish, imo, but it is a good song. Edit: & some of the backing vocals don't help either Over the years the song has continued to grow on me. I love it now despite the whistling and fairground keys Emotive and meaningful. Tbe outro is very special And yes, my disappointment was huge as I raced home from the shop with the single and stuck it in the turntable 😆

This was, of course, the peculiar single with the b-side that played at 33 1/3 rpm so that they could squeeze Backwater on as a 2nd track on the b-side. Therefore, they also had to have a jukebox version that had a b-side that played at 45 rpm & so only featured Hold You Back. Most strange.

Yes I'd forgotten that Guess it was aimed to cover their tracks. My disappointment with the single was fine because of the great b sides. The hard Rock marketing of the single and its promotion was so far removed from the music Later with MT they used suitably wimpy artwork, which of course most of us hated..

Mad to think that whilst this was being mixed at the Marquee Studios, in August 1980, Rick rang through to say that Heidi had passed away. Great song, and I love the outro solo John (Eden) also mentioned there's a copy of this song that ends when the tape runs out and ends with a long echo I think Rossi and John Eden were working on the outro solo to the song in Rossi's loft studio when the call came through from Rick. At the very moment, as far as I know, when the tape ran out. The song worked well for the Christmas market and it worked well for me personally.
