Reunited on stage in London, the pop legends premiered their first new music in nearly 40 years and unveiled a ground-breaking live show which transforms the Swedish quartet into virtual reality Abba-tars.
Appearing at a “pop-up” east London arena which will host the Abba Voyage shows, Agnetha Faltskog, Bjorn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad finally revealed their first new recordings since 1982.
To the delight of fans watching on a live stream, Abba confirmed that I Still Have Faith In You and Don’t Shut Me Down will be followed by a full-length album, titled Voyage, in November.
I Still Have Faith In You, a ballad about the group’s return, expressing uncertainty and asking “do I have it in me?” surprised those expecting Abba to return with a stomping dance track. A video featured the first look at the group’s digtal representatives. The release of the new songs had been delayed by a year due to the pandemic as well as the technical demands of the live “digital entertainment experience”, staged at a purpose-built 3,000- capacity venue in the Olympic Park in Stratford.
Opening next May, Abba Voyage employs cutting-edge technology to bring virtual reality digital versions of the band members back onto the stage from their heyday.
An 850-strong team from Industrial Light & Magic, the special effects studio founded by George Lucas, has used motion capture techniques to create the four Abba-tars, who will perform to a soundtrack provided by a full 10-piece live band. It will be a “greatest hits” show with 22 songs, Ulvaeus promised.
Bjorn and Benny made the ultimate sacrifice – shaving off their famous beards to allow the motion capture team to map their faces.
Leading choreographer Wayne McGregor has created dance routines for the digital stars.
Abba turned down a $1bn offer for an in-the-flesh reunion tour. The group said fans would rather see classics such as Dancing Queen performed by a representation of their younger selves, in their spangly, jump-suited pomp.
Body doubles in their 20s were hired to film scenes used for the motion captured Abba-tars.
The eight shows-a-week VR experience could run for years. The arena can be broken down and transported to venues across the world.

Amazing songs, performance and overall production.

Hats off to them!

Absolutely adore ABBA!
Quo, Queen, ABBA, U2, AC/DC in that order.
Fleetwood Mac, Oasis, Michael Jackson, Rory Gallagher, The Rolling Stones, BB King, Franz Ferdinand and The Scissor Sisters miss out on the top 5. A spokesperson for the artists said they were gutted

I like 4 of their songs, but I've never seen them together on an ep.

Sheer pop perfection. Agnetha and Frida sounding like the intervening 40 years never happened and unmistakable Andersson/Ulvaeus melodies. So nice that musicians can come back together after decades and surprisingly find that indefinable magic is still there.

Sorry, but disappointed with the first two songs. Hopefully, the rest of the album will be better.

All very clever. And, I'm sorry, all very synthetic. Pixar, eat your heart out.
I like (liked) ABBA as much as anyone else and this sounds good and they look good. Of course it stands up to the quality of how they were 40 years ago. It's virtual; practically computer generated, both visually and sonically.
But I guess that's the whole point. This is where we are now. And does it actually matter as long as you like it? Probably not. Rick's voice on Over And Out was treated to make him sound 40 years younger.
The future is here.
