Probably not THE last but some of the last (offstage that is):
John posted these on FB a few years ago, ahead of the 2nd FF tour. They do look miserable, all of them
Wouldn't pay much attention to any miserable looking faces. Rehearsals are a pain in the hoop

Although not sure when it was captured, the above photo was used by Top Of The Pops when the single Rock 'N' Roll - the last one to feature Spud as a member of the group - was inside the UK Top 30 singles chart during Nov/Dec '81 and Jan '82.

Hmmm - shorter hair, BUT they're all smiling/laughing so either someone f*rted (my money's on AL - he lookes somewhat guilty!) or they were paid extra to 'be happy' for the photo. Looks like a possibility though!

The single was released in November '81 and Quo appeared in the TOTP studio for the performance that was aired on the 3rd December, not a promo, in the studio. Now this is when my memory gets a little hazy, however..... Quo were due to be on the Saturday Morning Swap Shop, on the BBC, around this time. They didn't appear due to bad weather in Montreux and they couldn't get to the UK (no "too much snow" jokes allowed) and they played the promo videos for Rock'N'Roll and Hold You Back. This was the first time I, and I suspect many others in the UK, had seen the Hold You Back promo video. I think we now know the reason fro the non-appearance of the band. The TOTP performance was later repeated on the December 17th show so I reckon we could date John's departure as between the 4th, as they wouldn't have traveled back to return within a day the day after TOTP was recorded, and the 11th, which is the day before when I think the Swap Shop non-appearance, which was 12th December, I think. Is a seven day window a good enough answer? Probably not for a Quo fan.

I wonder why the photographer didn't wait for Rick, I zoomed in and he's there waiting further back 😁 Maybe he was a bit wrecked and couldn't keep up 🤔 Francis wearing flares in 1978... weren't they way out of fashion by then?
They certainly were. But I have to hold my hands up and say it took me until about 1980 to get into straight-legged jeans Straight legged meant you were a punk; flares meant you were a real rock fan Delusional, of course, but I was young and hadn't become fashion conscious. That took another year or two. Then I just went mad for the next 40 years By '76 I had gone through my Lee Brilleaux straight cuts and was in my Dee Dee Ramone second hand Levi phase. Rock was bloated by that point and I had lost a lot of interest. Except for Quo.

Is a seven day window a good enough answer? Probably not for a Quo fan. Good detective work Col, well done!! So it would appear that John's exit happened around the first week in December 1981, so this would have been the start of the two month period when Quo had the studio in Montreux. If this is the case, the selection process for a new drummer must have been rapid as the rent of Mountain studio was already on the clock, ticking away - and I doubt Pete was waiting in the wings at this stage! And then when he got the job, he would have had to be quickly brought up to speed or had John already laid down tracks and Pete just augmented it??? It really is a very strange couple of months in the band's life; all hush hush, get the hassle of John leaving over with quickly, tell as few as possible, get a new man in and get the record done asap! So thanks to Col we can now pin down John's leaving to early December '81. So maybe that photo used for the Rock n Roll single on TOTP could well have been taken in the last weeks of John's tenure - unless someone knows different!!!

I suppose you could argue that this is their final 'footage' together, a clip from their appearance on TOTP on 3rd December 1981, miming to Rock n Roll! They must have flown back out to Montreux that night/next morning and John was gone a few days later. End of an era and no mistake (although Andy seems to be enjoying himself )!

Really interesting thread! Yes, thanks Col for the detective work. Was TOTP usually filmed the day before broadcast (i.e. Wednesdays)? So this end part of the performance might be the last image of them together

It’s not from 1977.
