Rick Astley hit Never Gonna Give You Up has passed one billion views on YouTube. The song, released 34 years ago this week, found new popularity with the rise of Rickrolling, an internet prank where people are tricked into clicking on a hyperlink that leads to the video. At the time of writing, the YouTube video has 1,001,264,871 views. Astley called passing the billion mark "mind blowing". In a video posted to Twitter, he said he was "very lucky". Video here. Short clip of Frame at 1:35. When released, the song reached number one in the UK - but Rickrolling helped it find a new audience, clocking up an extra 2.3 million views.

I will not dignify this thread by responding to it Too late But it does demonstrate the immediacy, and possibly the disposability, of music these days. For good or bad is a debate in itself. There's probably room for all but the largely throwaway stuff gets the most 'hits' presumably. A billion hits is meaningless without it manifesting itself into something tangible for the artist. Which I presume it hasn't.

Which I presume it hasn't. Well he didn’t write it. So it will all depend on his contract. However he still performs. Depending on the current publishing etc. But a billion views is about £3million in revenue as it generates revenue from adverts.

YouTube usually generates an income of some sort. People making a mint out of filming their baby's first comical steps or a bride falling into a fountain Good luck to Mr Astley. But not to Pete Waterman. I have to draw the line somewhere

The reason is that it's stuck in the middle of some unrelated vids, bit like a virus but it's not invasive or damaging. Nobody actually types it in, the fcuking thing just appears midway through something. It's called Rickrollin.
"Of course, the milestone would never have been reached if it wasn’t for the immensely popular and enduring internet meme known as “Rickrolling,” a bait and switch prank in which social media users post a disguised hyperlink that leads to Astley’s music video. The meme also extends to posting the song’s lyrics in unexpected places."

Ok, confession time. I am a nervous type, so do not abuse me. I am going to see him live on September 18th. He is the 'star's act after the horse racing at Newbury. It was not my choice to go obvs, but it's a birthday present for one of the wifes closest friends. We have a slap up meal in a restaurant whilst watching the racing, drink involved of course. Then afterwards The act plays for just over an hour I guess. I am going with an open mind. Being pissed obviously helps as well!
