Did anyone else watch the programme on BBC4 "Great British Photography Challenge"? I'm not much into photography and I always think that folk who are always looking through a lens miss a great deal of what is going on around them. When I've been to interesting places I often forget to take pictures, too busy looking, listening and discovering. However, I watched tonight because it was Rankin, celebrity photographer. Until a couple of years ago I had never heard of the fellow. My granddaughter was very excited to have her portrait done by him and I still have no idea why her employers thought it necessary as she is a maths graduate and was tailoring software for customers. I've dabbled in photography for quite a long time. I almost never go anywhere without my bridge camera over my shoulder; just in case. And my sometimes arty-farty holiday snaps annoy everyone, especially Mrs Mortified In the 80's I had all the equipment; cameras, lenses, filters, tripods, all the paraphernalia. Used to drag myself up Calton Hill and Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh at sunset and sunrise. I actually got fed up hauling all the stuff about because I don't drive. But I've got my FlickR page like every other below average amateur Anyway, I didn't see the prog last night. I caught a bit of it, though, as I was coming out of Netflix. Someone looked like they were going to photograph a toadstool. Or was it a mushroom? But don't you worry about photographers. They wander round with a camera lens in their head constantly viewing the world as an image, looking at light and shadows and compositions. They miss less than you'd think I like that photo. The trick is in making it look natural I guess. I presume there was a fan on given that her hair seems to be 'lively'. Or was she just asked to turn her head round quickly? Ta for sharing

I missed the series but my photography is my hobby too and I will check it out. But I know exactly what you mean also by missing out by being busy taking photos too. I've often felt more relaxed when out without my camera. But on other days, its a means to get out and actually connect with the world around me. Beautiful photo of your granddaughter btw. Her generation will be fans of his and that is why.

I see your home made face cream has worked wonders again! You must turn heads when your in the queue at Faggots-R-Us.

I find I notice more with my camera. Always looking at the detail in places and objects, taking in views and thinking how well they’d photograph. I always try and limit how many photos I take, and try and make sure I’m taking photographs and not ‘snaps’. Sunday night’s view.

... Especially the bottom one is a work of art because of the perspective. Nice one, 4th.
