A random thought struck me recently! Despite all the ups and down, triumphs and disappointments, imagine if Status Quo had never come into existence; that Rossi had taken over his dad's ice-cream business and Rick had stayed in light entertainment with the Highlights, where would your musical journey have taken you in the 1970s? For me its hard to envisage an alternative really. I liked the 73-75 Glam era, Slade, Sweet etc, then the Punk scene got me energised in the late 70s. Also Bon Scott era Ac/Dc kept me amused up to Highway to Hell or thereabouts. But after that, there was the barren 80s and 90s to contend with. God knows what would have kept me afloat then; a bit of Georgia Satellites and Black Crowes and a touch of Oasis, that's it really. Apart from early Ac/Dc, no other band came close to giving me that perennial musical fix which Quo did with their shuffle/boogie output. So, though Quo peaked and troughed regularly after the 70s, for me they were always a constant on my musical trek. Only for them, my musical odyssey would be very much diminished. So, what would your experience without Quo have been?

The same journey as without them. I got fed up with them after NTL and enjoyed TNWOBHM. Later on folk and blues were added to the mix.

I listen to so much music, it wouldn’t have been much of an issue. I listen to them less and less. I also dialled out after Alan left and only returned after UTI. It would have been a hole but one I’m sure I could have filled.
Well apart from the good times I have had listening to the band.

Great topic, quodec!
I thought Abba were f*#in' brilliant when I was real young [still do - melodies and harmony to kill for!] then..
Deep Purple knocked me out just around the same time I 'found' Quo ['77/'78] - and so it has remained with DP [but not really their off-shoots - I liked some Rainbow [nothing after DTE] and 'Gillan' was raw and in-yer-face, great!] then Van Halen, Rush and Judas Priest equally knocked me out, shortly after that Yes, then Kansas, before I fell hook-line-and-sinker for all Zappa's stuff, and on and on and on... to Richard Thompson, Max Webster and beyond! Like Charles above tho' I gave up on Quo after NTL / '1982' time and it never bothered me in the slightest [unlike the tripe they produced, which did!] Had I never discovered them? No worries, it wouldn't have changed anything... I think!

Same as before, everything but grime, no musical value in swearing onto a backing track to which you've had no musical input

I have very eclectic tastes.
Elvis, Kinks, Alan Price, Slade, Queen, Chris Barber, Blondie, Johnny Cash, Elkie Brooks, Jussi Bjoerling, Divine Comedy, Robert Plant, Cerys Mathews, Verdi's Operas, Mario Lanza, Wynton Marsalis and many more......
Quo have the advantage in that they keep going

Well, if they'd never existed I wouldn't know what I'd missed out on. However, I've always liked so much different stuff that I don't think there'd be a gaping hole, musically. The departures of John & then Alan meant the band became something that didn't really appeal to me, first on record & then live. So for me, they are largely a '70s entity anyway. Much like AC/DC.

Good question and one I am finding very difficult to answer. Never really into heavy metal but always liked ZZ Top but find nowadays I like listening to any late 70s early 80s bands with a wide eclectic mix.. Thinking nowadays I wish I hadnt been so blinkered back in the day! So much good music out there. Sadly Quo no longer produce it.

But now any “new” music I listen to is always at least 20-30 years old. Currently really into miles Davis (in a silent way), John Barry’s soundtracks, Gary numan, human league, pentangle, Africa funk, .... it’s all good.

Excellent question that is almost impossible to answer. But you know me; I'll try Like granny , I have very eclectic and varied tastes. Always have. But I sometimes wonder how much Quo played a part in that. Everything from Rammstein to Rachid Taha to Mahler to Neil Cowley Trio. But always Quo. Always. And, like railroad007, grime doesn't do it for me. And I have tried. I just feel totally disconnected from it. But then I feel the same about Springsteen. However, I'm happy to give anything a bash; any style. I suspect my musical journey may have been much the same but Quo formed some sort of steady platform (very high tan ones in 1975 as it happens ); a constant to let me experiment whilst knowing I could always go back to them. By the time Quo had begun to produce music I didn't like in the mid 80's, the pattern had already been established. Quo didn't dictate my tastes but they got me interested in music and opened all the doors.

Great question and hard for me to answer
I don't have varied tastes, basically love heavy and other types of rock and have only recently branched out into blues n folk
It was Quo that got me into music. Had I not seen Quo on TV I may not have got into rock until later
Quo take me to a place no other music does. The euphoria it delivers unlike any other. I suspect I just wouldn't be into music anywhere near as much as I am without them

It is easy to think that you would have listened to other music anyway.
But truly, think of the world without them.
Would any of them have become famous with another band - would the members of that band have been distracted and not joined another band that we know subsequently succeeded? Would another band have done the same anyway (I hear Beatles haters often say someone else would have done that). What would all the externals (Andy, Rhino et al) have moved onto at that point they joined Quo?
Who would have opened Live Aid? Would anyone else have made John Fogerty royalty rich for RAOTW? What if there was no Caroline?
What of the bands who openly say they were influenced by Quo?
Who would have got hold of those two Telecasters?
When you look deeply into a question that says what if.....it strains your brains as so much history is changed!
