Maybe the best of the covers albums but, conversely, probably the least welcome. By fans and band alike. Rumour has it that the re-workings of 4 songs was so that they covered the promotional aspect, which the band didn't want to do. And, of course, the music company was thrown into a change of plan after the success of Heavy Traffic. So ( Rockin' All Over The) Riffs was a year late in coming out. Something like that anyway. There aren't any real stand-out tracks for me but neither are there any turkeys. I never liked the originals of I Fought The Law or Centrefold so they've not been played much and Rick's Elvis parody on Wild One probably detracts from what was a great Iggy Pop song. Having said that, I do like what they did with On The Road Again so maybe that is the stand-out track. The major bonus was the excellent DVD which accompanied the first release. But the gratuitous use of the model (Michelle Clack?) didn't do old men in boys' clothes any favours. And my sympathy goes to the poor merch designers who had to do something with the naff cover. The didn't succeed

Michelle Clack...what a name, my screen is now covered in early morning tea.
"In a house on the corner looking over the track I woke up with a fever next to some bird named Clack"

This was supposed to have come out just after Heavy traffiic but got put back a year due to the former selling well. The band didn’t have to promote it really but named a tour after it instead. The band were very anti doing it but was part of an agreement to get Heavy traffic released. Out of the 3 covers albums they did it is probably the best produced one. Some decent covers here not really adding much to the originals but a fun listen occasionally. The re recordings of their own songs was just going through the motions and how many times have we heard caroline whatever you want and rocking all of the world redone on record and numerous live versions? The extra live dvd on the limited edition was very welcome though as at the time wasn’t very many Quo dvd live releases around..

Whatever You Want on Riffs ( and I bet RAOTW) have a different sound because they were recorded two years before.
I think there was an issue from Alan about them miming to the originals on telly.
I really like this album.
The overall sound is brilliant. I think the gut air sound on On The Road Again , for example, is terrific.
I so wish they had recorded Heavy Traffic in the same studio as the sound they got for Riffs was great. Heavy Traffic’s sound is dull in comparison.

Borrowed it from the library and there was no fine for an overdue item.

Controversial opinion, but I'd suggest that Riffs has the best production (guitar sound especially) of any Quo album.
It's the best covers album, in as much as the covers appear to be the only ones with any real thought put into them about arrangements and suitability.
Could do without the re-recording of Junior's Wailing perhaps.

Production-wise it's streets ahead but that's as much 30 years of technology as anything else. It's not a comment on the quality of the albums themselves to suggest that the sound quality is of its time. The production on every album since HT* is overdone and lacks the crispness and clarity that Riffs has; TPAOY and ISOTFC especially. *Obviously with the assumption that Riffs was recorded first.

You may have had a funny feeling, but the lady still said no. "She said her name was Clack, it was time to go" I remember people playing with their Clackers was quite a common sight in the 70s. I must dust mine off...

Said it was alright earlier...Just to fully expand on it.
I find it decent. There's nothing that's murdered (JW, WYW and RAOTW aside! Fucking dreadful!!!) Some are quite good and enjoyable (Born To Be Wild, On The Road Again, I Fought The Law, Wild One)
Overall, I find it decent and one of those albums that makes me say, "Oh Quo done a covers album" instead of, "Ugh, Quo done a covers album"
Great guitar sound. Especially Rick's intro on, "On The Road Again" You can tell the exact model of guitar he was using! (I'll get my anorak)
