Scratching my head to think.... have Quo ever re-recorded a studio version of Railroad?
Lets be honest... good as the original is, the vocals are sung slightly weird as a psychedelic throwback, and overall it sounds a bit tinny, not as much of the deep raw sound Quo later became famous for. Compare to how they were doing it live (as part of medleys) in later years - vocals sound more in tune and overall a much heavier sound.
POMM, Caroline, 4500 Times, RAOTW, WYW, Down the Dustpipe, ITAN, Tommy, Cant Give You More all had multiple studio recordings modernised but in keeping with the original sound...
So has there ever been another bash at a heavier studio recording, either released on some obscure collectors edition or unreleased? And if not, should they - I think modern production would suit it.

Not that I can think of. There aren't even any of those 'alternate mix' versions on one of the numerous PYE compilations across the decades. Well, not on any of them that I have. Been a while since I listened to the original but I think most old Quo recordings will sound tinny by today's production standards and loads of tracks would benefit from re-recording. Bit of a purist me, though. I like the old authentic sound How does it sound on the BBC Paris Theatre recording from 1973 as a matter of interest?

The way to look at Railroad is it's the missing link between Apes and Humanity or the day the big monolith in 2001 A Space Odyssey appeared shaped like a Fender Telecaster.

Like I listen to stuff released in mono in mono. Personally I see releases as a snap shot in time. Let the live arena be where the changes happen. (Yeah largely not Quo’s thing).

I'll second that, might just be because it's live but it definitely has 'something' the original studio recording doesn't.

Always thought Quo bettered their material live, with a few exceptions like Rock n Roll, LOAI. I even like the version of MT from 1989...

As like the rest of Dog Of Two Head, Railroad is perfect.
Just leave it alone.
Go find a live version, there's plenty out there.

The groove in the first half is massive! (And the reason I was always bitching about how stiff the song sounded during the reunions because I was comparing it to THAT version...)

The version from BBC, Paris Theatre 1973 is absolutely amazing! One of my absolute favourite live tracks by Quo ever! (and so is also Someone’s Learning from the same gig, pure magic!)

Railroad and Mean Girl, were the first 2 tracks I got in too, from the Dog album . I used to play my sister's album when she went out and it made a change from the 2 T Rex albums I was playing at the time, Bolan Boogie and Electric Warrior, 50 years ago this year.
