It’s a shame Rick never said what he really thought of Francis. ‘Self serving party pooping control freak, the antithesis of rock n roll’ or maybe not. According to Patty’s book, Rick couldn’t stand Francis but Francis had an affection for Rick. I am reliably informed her book is best taken with 3 buckets of salt. My comment was tongue in cheek to when it came to Ricks views.

There have been hints about a lack of full time involvement with 1+9+8+2 and Aquostic. And Quid Pro Quo, if I recall correctly. He played quite a lot on this album, its documented. And you can hear it hear.it most definitely on a couple of tracks a. Great album for me, best thing they've done since Never too late,.I play it alot and have been a fan a long time

I just didn't realize we were talking about albums where he was, possibly, completely absent. Also one album I like a lot. Powerful and heavy. Just a bit one dimensional, but, with their repertoire, I really don't mind it.

If "Rocker" means exclusively a rocker, the bar is raised so high as nobody is included. Even Lemmy loved varied festivals and enjoyed live jazz And ABBA, too! I know I've tripped over Lemmy before. What I actually meant was more in terms of their own output. Quo always seemed more diverse than the stereotypical 'rockers' to me. Like Rick singing "Big Fat Mama" and then "All the Reasons". That's what Francis seems to be getting at. Considering that he also wrote "This is Me" and "Mystery Island", not to mention some of the songs on his solo album, though, not sure if the point is that well-made.

Is there really a 'rocker' who doesn't have musically light and shade? Maybe its more a way of life Rossi refers to. Or maybe in my view simply didn't understand why Rick didn't want to change as he aged. A bit like Lemmy et al.

Believe it or not, some people loathe ballads...

Believe it or not, some people loathe ballads... Which would be true. However most bands in the broad area Status Quo play and record in. Blues based pop rock. Slow songs are on nearly every album. Just Status Quo since the 70s haven’t always been great at them. And light and shade isn’t just about ballads. Hello doesn’t have a ballad but has light and shade.

I believe I've heard (or read) somewhere that Rick wasn't that involved in the recording of the Heavy Traffic album

I believe I've heard (or read) somewhere that Rick wasn't that involved in the recording of the Heavy Traffic album He was involved for the majority of it but, from what I'm led to believe, he had an arm injury on the Never Say Never tour and before it, which led to him being absent from some sessions

Always weird to see them with the Telecasters in the studio.
I assumed they didn't use them a lot of the times, except for the earlier albums

Heavy Traffic / Riffs Sessions. There's also footage of them running through Blues And Rhythm I always assumed they used dynamic mics for the voices too, for some reason (Francis' one seems like it, though), but Rick seems to be using a large diaphragm condenser mic. Yet, you can't hear any noise from his breathing or anything, usually. Just shows how much better singer he is compared to nowadays vocal "artists", where most of the sound you hear from their mouth is air being inhaled and exhaled.
