That first review is an intelligent, well researched and insightful piece. The others are exactly what they critics accuse Quo of - lazy, formula retreads.
A properly critical review is acceptable if it is based on listening and consideration. Despite what these people say there was a discernable shift in Quo's direction following the (failed?) more commercial attempts of RAOTW and IYCSTH which music critics should have been aware of.
Who Asked You similar to Mud's Dynamite? Can anyone see any similarity there?

The last few bars mirror Reason For Living in the same way. David Hepworth became a respected journalist and (I think) present the "Old Grey Whistle Test" for a while in the 80's. But he's been a bit slack with his review here. I'll be honest though; when the album came out I did think it might be the last one. It bordered on a concept album of being fed up with "the road and fame". As it is, they just kept on moaning about it for goodness knows how long Francis got a lot of it our of his system with Take Me Away

To me WYW still is one of their best albums, the last great album. (JS and NTL were only very good)

Brilliant album only let down by the title track(heard it too many times) and the dreadful LOAI. If only Bad Company had been on there instead Cheers

Does anyone know why the penguin appeared on the album sleeve and all the promo material?
I know they were on the LOAI video as well but I assume the album cover came first.

Yeah in my top 3. I think the first reviewer summed it up well. I do believe up to that point this was their most accomplished and consistent Album. I never get bored of it but I do get bored of the earlier albums even though I still love them all. I have this and NTL in my top 3 so I guess I don’t agree with them peaking in 1975/6. Each to their own though.

As an album, I thought at the time is was an improvement on the two studio outputs that came before it. It was certainly MILES better than If You Can't Stand The Heat! But I did still think it was short of being as good as anything up to Blue For You. It had a couple of 'skip' tracks on it for me, whereas these others didn't. The second half of Living On An Island is brilliant. Thing is, you had to sit through the first half to get there! And there are parts of Runaway that irritate me. There's a sort of whistling keeps on muscling in and spoiling it, which I presume is some sort of keyboard or synth. Little did I appreciate this was only the beginning
