More startling originality from the reviewer. Mind you, the review is better than the single deserved - just as well the reviewer probably hadn't bothered to listen to it. Incredible that they released this rather than Too Close To The Ground.

If this sounds like every other Quo single to the reviewer, he or she doesn't know $hit When it came to Quo singles, this was an all time low point for me. Following on as it did from Marge. And two fairly ropey ones before that. With another on the horizon. It got the review it deserved. Just for the wrong reasons

I don't mind the re-recorded version.
Part of me hopes it isn't true about Francis sneaking in to the studio and recording the version on the album, behind everyone's backs... The other part of me hopes it is true and that at least Rick and Alan were not part of that monstrosity

Encouragingly enough, FR says this about GDTT in his 'I never shut-the-f*#k-up' book....
"A fourth single was released from Back to Back in the middle of the tour, a version of a song called ‘Going Downtown Tonight’ by a new guy I’d discovered named Guy Johnson. On reflection it was a piss-poor record, with chirpy keyboards and synths replacing the guitars, and with that heavily processed drum sound that was suddenly popular in the eighties. It wasn’t much of a hit, barely getting into the top 20. Alan was clearly disgusted by the whole thing... blah, blah, blah". [He doesn't say who played on the song, btw!]

The other part of me hopes it is true and that at least Rick and Alan were not part of that monstrosity The album version is a demo, probably recorded at home. The sneakiness was actually putting a very sonically weak sounding demo track on a proper album! Maybe trying to get one of his mates, Guy Johnson, some wonga?

The video is unintentionally hilarious. Thousands of Quo fans, bouncing up and down, head banging, rocking out to Going Down Town Tonight "Alan was disgusted" Ya think, Francis? If I was in that audience, I'd be asking myself, "are they taking the piss out of me here?"

. Incredible that they released this rather than Too Close To The Ground. I think young fans were to blame. A mate of mine wrote to the band appalled at the band's farewell single being a ballad ! At the time I heartily agreed. 13 / 14 year olds were probably a large proportion of the fans who put singles into the charts. I genuinely think the band responded to fan feedback. If I remember rightly , adverts for a TCTTG single had gone out and the band faced a backlash from headbanging young teenagers I don't mind the rerecorded single ,the solo does lift it. I was into my 30's before I appreciated TCTTG

I was into my 30's before I appreciated TCTTG Well the fuckers didn't go & buy it in droves - rerecorded or not. Maybe it would have done better as a double a-side, or perhaps it was just one too many single release from the album.

If I was in that audience, I'd be asking myself, "are they taking the piss out of me here?" Are you remembering a different music video? Quo "performed" Going Down Town Tonight to an empty venue during the soundcheck. The live bits were shot throughout the show whilst they were playing the normal set. At this point fans won't have even heard the new version of Going Down Town Tonight as it wasn't released until days after the concert in Zwolle.

I know...My point was if I was in that audience and I saw it there after, I'd think it was a piss take. The video still consists of the band "performing" GDTT and thousands of fans rocking out to it. Doesn't matter it was edited in later on, it's still amusing to look at, giving the type of track that it is.

I sometimes forget people can't see my demeanor over text/online posts. It has led to some awkward moments, accusations and fallouts
