Obviously didn't realise the single was slightly different to the album version!
Mystery Song was my favourite Quo track back in the day, & it generally still is. I was one who didn't have the album & so it was while before I discovered that this fantastic single had a separate, even more fantastic, album version. Oh to be a teenager again!

On vinyl you could tell by the gap in the grooves that there was a difference between the start and about a minute and odd in. You could buy albums then before the official release date, there was a record shop owner at the junction of The Cut and Waterloo road who made a reputation in doing this, he would see you passing and it was "tell your mates I'll have the new Quo album on Friday". You could buy an album at the same time as the MM, NME or any other paper got their review copy so you basically heard it without any spoilers except for the single. One look at the running time, The fact that it was the last track bearing in mind previous Quo albums closers, and the spread of the grooves..you knew that the rest of the album was building towards this Mystery Song. The highest octane 70's fumes I ever sniffed!
I SEE THAT LOOK ON YOUR FACE.
Look at the FTMO pictures on the cover, has anyone ever been that consistently brilliant?
I think I'd be bitter, jealous and small minded if I joined a band and the blokes whose shoulders I'm standing on had produced this.

Why didn't you unpack your speakers? A bit germophobic?

I have a younger mate who believed the nonsense about 3 chords. I played him this. He's still not a great fan but they now have his respect.

People remember where they were when JFK was shot, when John Lennon was shot, when the planes crashed into the twin towers. Myself, I remember, with great clarity, playing Mystery Song for the first time on my record player to the first girl I went crazy for. She wasn't a fan of the band but I converted her thanks to this track. Relationship didn't last as I was only 16 at the time but how can a single song provide such vivid lasting memories 44 years later?? The sheer power of it all.

Love the review. So accurate. Not sure if Spud would agree though!
