Well, he had a German wife...and spent a lot of time there touring. Did he ever live there? He could say "don't drive my car" Not sure what else if anything he could say! Anyone know?

Yes but very limited and terrible pronunciation. Marietta still had an apartment here when they were married but they never lived there long term. When he spent weekends and down time in Germany it tended to be in Munich. There were some really fantastic evenings with Rick and Marietta, such a wonderful lady, class to her fingertips. And there were some evenings with Rick and Patty.

There was a video somewhere (of RPJ I think) from backstage of the Rock Meets Classic Tour where Rick says a few words/sentences in German. Also, the last time I met him prior to the gig in Winterbach 2015 he talked a little German to the 4,5 of us who were waiting for them. I remember it being quite good, keeping in mind he never really lived here and probably spoke English to and with Mariette and Rick Jr. Anyways, I will never forget this moment and still find it very cool, talking to one of my rock heroes in my mother tongue (although we switched back to English quickly, of course ) And obivously he knew the German word for street, audible in various live recordings of Little Lady

Back in the days of Analogue Satelite TV you could pick up RTL, SAT 1 etc German TV channels. Quo were on once with Thomas Gottschalk and he did an interview with them and Rick took the lead because he could speak german.

I would think his German was limited to "Get 'em off" etc

I imagine Rick's stock answer to that question would have been "Ja und nein"?!

Not just UK gigs He sang " Straße" during the Berlin 17th June 1990 performance - Little Lady being one of 3 cut tracks from the ELF 99 TV Broadcast

Doing it in front of an audience that doesn't speak German is what amuses me...

I must've been knackered at the time, as I misread what you'd replied as " why it was only done at UK gigs?" - so ignore me

If he could speak German then fair play to him. I am learning it at the moment, it is very difficult, much harder than I first thought. I have applied for German citizenship ( duel, with British), so I need to get my act in gear!
