My favourite Quo single. I was happy when it didn't sound like anything they'd done before.

Rain is a killer tune. Amazing primal riff, great melody and just a great performance from all concerned. I do wish live they hadn't dropped Franciss harmony on the verses and chorus as it adds a lot to the song IMO.
Top drawer - one of my faves

For a long time I used to think it was so boring.
I have no idea what I was thinking. It was wasted on my young ears.

Great song. Flawless!
Something so satisfying by playing it on guitar!

The reviewer's last sentence is definitely not wrong! There was so little rock n roll on radio and tv land in early 1976. Quo must have sounded like real musical outliers at this time, when there was virtually nothing but pop pap in the charts!

(firstly, just an aside, that reviewer looked quite fit!), but as regards "Rain", I think the reason a few of us went 'off it' in later years was the live versions or maybe being watered down coupling it with 4500 etc, but when you haven't heard the original for a while and come back to it you forget how brilliant it was...

I’m a bit yes and no on Rain.
I lose interest a bit by the last chorus.... it feels like one chorus too many.
Other times I love it all.

Caroline Coon wrote for "Melody Maker" and came across as a bit of a Quo fan. She also reviewed the Mystery Song single and gave it 5 stars if I recall correctly.
The music press were beginning to come round, probably because punk and new wave were on the horizon. And pub rock was also getting a good press; Ducks Deluxe, Brinsley Schwarz, the Feelgoods, all that. Prog and overblown rock were getting it tougher by 1976 whereas before they'd been the darlings.
Quo rode a bit of a wave of praise for a while. But Geoff Barton's review of Just Supposin' in "Sounds" put paid to all that. 1 star and a hammering. Although, it was only about 2 paragraphs, so presumably he didn't even listen to it.
Mr Barton was never a favourite of mine after that, despite his metal leanings.
Not sure what happened to Ms Coon.
