Well there were millions more buying the new Here I go again... Must have been the replacing of the "hobo" by "drifter" which made it so much more delightful. Remember getting the original picture disc single ,1982 I think ,and preferring the b side ,bloody luxury ! It annoyed me in 87 that it was now a hit in the UK only because it had been a hit in America. I don't think anyone would prefer the later version who already knew the original. Of the later stuff ,still of the night sounds amazing at loud volume ...

It annoyed me in 87 that it was now a hit in the UK only because it had been a hit in America. I don't think anyone would prefer the later version who already knew the original. Of the later stuff ,still of the night sounds amazing at loud volume ... Let us remember it was a top 40 hit when it was originally released in 1982. Whitesnake were a sizeable rock act in the early 80s. They were quite used to top 40 singles, if not on every release. They had headlined Donington in '83. They didn't have a hit because of it being a hit in America. They had a hit, because of their return being a big event in the 80s music scene. The rise of pop rock in the music charts. Whether that be Bon Jovi or Europe who were making big hits and getting alot of radio play. As did Whitesnake on their return. Yes they rode a wave created for them but so did Def Leppard also. Translating success elsewhere into the UK. Still of the night is a great song. Aimed absolutely at the American audience. Just like the remix of Slide it in.

paradiseflatsI heard at the time that the 87 version had lots of radio play off the back of it being a US hit, but had poor UK sales. Can't imagine many UK fans wanted to buy the inferior rerecorded single when it would also be on the album. Of course I may be wrong. But to me the previous singles success had been off the back of a good fanbase... radio play was minimal

The first single from the album was Still of the night. (highest position No 16) Here we go again the second single. Not sure who told you it had poor sales. It went to No.9 and is their only single to be certified gold in the UK. Yes a much bigger radio hit in the US in part due to them putting out a radio edit. I think one of the differences is the people who bought the singles were probably teenage girls. Quite the change in rock circles at the time. I remember going to Donington in '87 and to my surprise finding teeny boppers there. ( yes in a minority) For a short while hair metal/rock was very popular with the ladies. I think the only gig where I heard teen screams between songs when Bon Jovi performed. (With the exception when I took my nieces to see boy bands).

Had a listen
Can't recommend it
These songs generally have the same arrangements as before, but they are heavier and more aggressive in delivery
Coverdales voice is heavily distorted, which I don't much like
This is more a metal makeover than a blues one. There's stabs of nice bluesy moment's here and there, but little conviction
If I wanted to listen to metal, I wouldn't listen to this. Same for blues

I liked their albums up to Come An' Get It & remember an outstanding performance at Reading '79, not sure if they were even on the original bill. Funnily enough, Gillan was on the bill too. Yep - kinda the same here; didn't get anything after CAGI - until I relented and got 1987... they're gone to the sad ol' LP-ground in the sky now. Strange, I only have 'Trouble' and the Double-Live LPs left. I listened to W/S 'hits' album a while back and to me very little of it has aged at all well - so I can see why my albums 'went'!
