When I first started listening to Status Quo, for some reason I wasn’t as keen on Rollover lay down.
As the years went on it became a real favourite.
It mixes heaviness with a lightness of touch with Rossi playing a series of great solo licks. A driving force of a song.
Less keen on the modern live version and all that string bending but still majestic.

Hello. Roll Over Lay Down has evolved considerably over the 40 plus years of live performance.
I believe Francis plays it the way he does now because he's become more of an entertainer than a musician. The thing about the over-bending of guitar strings is to do with interacting with the audience and putting a smile on people's faces. Everyone knows the song inside out anyway so it doesn't need to be played properly. It's the same with the vocals. We can fill in the gaps that Francis leaves and he can have fun by slurring words. The whole is bigger than the some of the parts so the mistakes (which are deliberate as a matter of fact) are part of the show.
It is Quo's appearance on Les Dennis show in 1989 to play Not at All that probably influenced Francis to have a bit more freedom to mess around on guitar. Les Dennis was famous for playing out of tune on the piano on purpose and it was part of the routine.
That's what has happened with Francis and his guitar playing and vocals. No one goes to a Quo show for musicality and to write theses or get PHDs. It's about fun and escapism. Ultimately, Francis is an entertainer. As long as the other band members play properly he can have a free rein then to dance with Rhino and do funny facial expressions. That's showbusiness folks.
I thank you.

Swiss you are confusing the great Les Dawson with the far from great Les Dennis. You must carry out considerable research if you are clear why people attend a music show not for music. Each to their own but I go to a gig and don’t go for jazz hands.

Yeah, I did think he meant Les Dawson. Unless Les Dennis tinkered with Amanda Holden's ivories Personally I've always slightly preferred the live version of Roll Over Lay Down (from whichever era) to the studio recording, although that's the only track from Hello! I think I can say that about. Maybe Softer Ride, although it's a close run thing. There are three that stick in the mind more than any others; the Milton Keynes version (overdubs/drug fuelled or not - the solo is brilliant), the TOTP special from (I think) 2000, which I don't think I've heard since incidentally, and the Liverpool Pops rendition which is heavier than Master of Reality meets Parkway Drive String bending I'm not that ar$ed about. Facial expressions even less so as I'm rarely looking at anything but the floor

ROLD has always been the epitome of a great Quo tune for me, especially live. The FF classic I've never liked is Paper Plane. As for string bending entertaining the audience, the only result of it is more trade for Gaz with people requiring new dentures to replace the ones they've ground down during Francis's solos.

I don't like the Hello version of ROLD...
Probably because the live versions are fucking ridiculously good...Well, up as far as Matt. I've never seen Leon so can't comment...And up until Francis decides to start torturing his guitar, like it's a criminal

Hello. Roll Over Lay Down has evolved...so it doesn't need to be played properly. It's the same with the vocals... Which is what I’m sure he would say about the songs, Edwards ‘sings’.

I can't go along with that at all I'm afraid!
Dammit to hell - I want to hear it being played properly!! - so JC-Quo or Status Quotes will do fine, even if it is on Youtube .
[Sorry folks - I f**ked-up my previous attempt at replying to this! 🙄]

There are three that stick in the mind more than any others; the Milton Keynes version (overdubs/drug fuelled or not - the solo is brilliant) Thankfully, the only thing overdubbed about Roll Over Lay Down from that concert is the vocals, and the odd bit of Ricks guitar during the intro when he stopped playing here and there. Rossi's solos that day for ROLD were brilliant. There's a run that he does after the 1st quieter section, before the guitar interplay with him and Rick, that I love. God how I'd love for that show to be remixed. Some solos of his on the day were f*cking shocking simply because half of the time he wasn't paying attention and was missing cues here and there, but when he was in the game he played really well. As others have said, I can't stand the version on the Hello! album either.

Ok - there's obviously something wrong with me, I absolutely LOVE the 'Hello!' version. 'To each their own' I guess!
