I heard this once, can't remember it. Is it the one with the Beach boys (or a version of them) on ?
For those who enjoy it, celebrate it. I will wait and see if it is worth my attention.

Yep, PF it's the one with the song Fun Fun Fun which they did together with the Beach Boys. It's a covers album

TBH I thought the concept for the 30th was good. I find listening to it as an album quite pleasant although not an exhilarating experience. Certainly no worse than listening to their 20th anniversary effort. But it should, as an idea, stayed as a one off !

The band that recorded Army doing a covers album, all very slick. Strange selection of songs
The cover was a shock and remains painful to look at. When you walk in the room, complete with the suits, caused the unoffical fanzine to quit.
It did well, TV advertising worked. I think it would have done just as well it if had been really guitary and rocking, possibly even better.
For me the tour was a real low point, I came close to walking out during the show. When songs from DS were played, only then did the audience stand up and really enjoyed it. All I could hear were backing tapes and the realisation of how sad what I was seeing was.
I like I can hear the grass grow, get out of denver , proud mary. Most are listenable but I very much doubt I will return to this album

I like I can hear the grass grow, Don't stop, Johnny and Mary and get out of Denver. When you walk in the room is my absolute favorite on this album and the only song from this album that I return to. Quo's version of that song is better than the original and all of the other cover versions out there, absolutely lovely.

HNY everyone.
When this was released I would have pretty much liked anything the band did. It was a period where any exposure and success I thought was good. Particularly after failure chart wise of thirsty work.
But I was a young and naive 19 year old. I soon became more interested in Oasis who were doing real Quo but a billion times better than this turd.
The lofty chart place was a cause for celebration at the time but in hindsight it’s probably the absolute low point of their entire back catalogue. I know they did many cover albums but this was backed by a big record company and was the real start of desperation that continued till David Walker passed away.
Where to start: high points -
Sorrow, Get out of Denver and Proud Mary are listenable
The rest of a baffling collection of piss weak MOR that combines Hey Nonny Nonny novelty and nonsense with what looked like the Beach boys’ dads.
Absolutely awful
Pips production is worse than TW Guitars are barely audible Cover is an embarassment Song choices are terrible
That this was released during the very height of Britpop and all that went with it shows how far down the road of mediocrity the band were at this point.
Then the ill advised attempt to sue radio one for having better taste in music than the band. Desperate. I recall the head of Radio one saying they got a memo that “a major band will make an announcement outside the BBC”. Aye, because if they’d said “status quo and the night of the living dead are going to do a naff publicity stunt “ no one would have given a shit.
It took almost a decade to recover, Arguably they never really did.
Completely bereft of any merit. And the confirmation of the band as a novelty act

This would be my pick of Quo's cover versions, if someone held a gun to my head...
A Mess Of Blues Bloodhound Bring It On Home Bye Bye Johnny Carol Don't Stop Get Out Of Denver Green Tambourine I Can Hear The Grass Grow I Don't Want You It Takes Two Junior's Wailing (live '76) Once Bitten Twice Shy Roadhouse Blues Rock 'N' Me Sea Cruise Something 'Bout You Baby I Like Spicks And Specks The Anniversary Waltz The Future's So Bright (I Gotta Wear Shades) The Price Of Love (original version) The Wanderer Time To Fly (We Ain't Got) Nothin' Yet Wild Side Of Life
I thought Don't Stop was a great choice of song to cover for Quo - melodically, it's very them. But i think the real low point for them was not the album itself, or any of the tacky stunts even, but the decision to mime the album to a live audience. What was the actual reason for that, just to release a VHS video to promote the album? Of all the bands to do that though!....

A real low point for the band. Love the album and this lineup are my favourite lineup throughout Quos history, but, this was simply another money grab sort of situation from David Walker. With him wanting a covers album as early as 1990 / 1991, thankfully Rock 'til You Drop happened and it did well in the charts, no. 10. Once 1993 / 94 came around, I'd say that Quo were starting to dwindle. Rick had become lazy and had next to no involvement with Thirsty Work. Far too much blame gets put onto Rossi for that album, but atleast he had written songs. Back onto Don't Stop and the BBC Radio One lawsuit.I suppose Don't Stop did exactly what David wanted it to do for the band, exposure wise. Charting at no. 2 and being in the charts for 12 weeks and constantly on TV programmes with either the Beach Boys or Maddy Prior. Suing the BBC was a silly move, and another DW idea. The breach of contract, over which the band is suing, relates to two verbal agreements Status Quo alleges Radio 1 made in 1992 and 1993. Status Quo claims that when the station was attempting to persuade the band to headline its 25th birthday party and to appear at Radio 1 roadshows the band was promised "all reasonable consideration in relationship to their playlists and broadcasts" as an "inducement". - Taken from an article in the Independent in March 1996 They should've released the Brixton gig as a double VHS with the playback and the live show on their own tapes. gav It would have been more expensive to do the whole album live, as it would had to have been recorded onto 48 track tape (Two 24 track machines running simultaneously) due to the amount of special guests and additional musicians performing on each track. Had any of the additional musicians cocked up, it would have meant more money being spent on studio time to overdub the mistakes.

I'll also add, 2 or 3 tracks were left off the album
Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting) - Elton John Money - The Beatles
Unsure of the third.
Quo also did a version of Fun Fun Fun with just Rossi on the vocals and no Beach Boys. It was used once on a playback performance for German TV in July 1996.
As well as Quos "performance" of FBI at the Brixton Academy show with Brian May.

It did what it was it was supposed to do. Made the band money (which I think they maybe badly needed) and put them back in the public eye. David Walker would have been getting the cigars out like Sir Lew Grade on speed As an artistic project, I shall quote the redoubtable John Peel at the time; " as an album it has no redeeming features whatsoever". And he liked the band!! I personally think it's probably the best of the three covers albums, although that isn't saying much. I rarely listen to any of it these days. I Can Hear The Grass Grow and Get Out Of Denver are the best on it by a mile for me. The first single was massively disappointing bearing in mind the sleeve of When You Walk In The Room! And their cover of Get Back completely removes the simple, bluesy charm of the original. Contrived and devoid of any sense of appreciation for the feel of the song . The sleeve has them looking remarkably like The Dave Clark Five and I get the whole retro look thing. I do. Unfortunately, I'm a Quo fan, not an aficionado of the 60's beat boom. But, again, it seemed to do the trick in terms of shifting units. Bottom line for some. Although I thought the BBC were 100% wrong in pursuing their ageist policy with Radio 1, this was not the time and this was not the album/single to have behind you when you decide on the publicity stunt of suing them. You could almost hear the sniggering in the ether Ironically, I actually prefer the album to that nadir of nadirs, Thirsty Work. Again, not saying much. It was tough being a Quo fan in 1996. Britpop and heavier dance from acts like The Prodigy were making Quo sound cobwebbed. It was that stuff I turned to till Quo got their act in gear. Thankfully, they did. Maybe 4 out of 10 for the two tracks I like plus one or two others that are listenable. Oh, but I did like Mortified as an extra track with the single
