I've no idea how to explain what one is.
I know when a Quo song is a shuffle. I know Feetwood Mac sometimes do them (Don't Stop), Eric Clapton did them. Presumably Quo got the idea from F Mac and Chicken Shack?
Who else does shuffles? Where do they come from ?
Had a quick Google and there's not much there easy to find
JC once said that only he and Mick Fleetwood could play a shuffle properly.
Any shuffle info appreciated 🍻👍🎸

Simply put, Swing: imgur.com/uwAfNogShuffle: imgur.com/pnEcs40This is the basic beat for each style. Shuffle you hear more in Quo and blues/rock bands. Swing you hear more in jazz. Here's an example video that doesn't have more than 5 minutes to show how that notation translates into play (though in this video it's not very well executed, it's enough to get an idea): And thank goodness John Coghlan can play a shuffle properly. If a person that plays drums can't play a shuffle properly, they better not call themselves drummers. It's one of the most basic beats you should be able to play on drums.

There's the thing, technically I don't know what shuffle is, but it was the 'dum da dum' groove from Break the Rules that first got me interested in Quo in 1974 and was probably the first time I could say 'There's a rock beat I like!' IMHO I think its Quo's 'shuffle' songs, e.g. Break the Rules, ROLD, most of Slow Train, Rain, Don't Waste my Time, WYW, that have that special something for me that no other band reproduces. Quo's 12 bar boogie tracks generally are their bread and butter, but its their shuffles that raise the game and lend them their unique take on rock and roll. Indeed their first venture away from their psychedelic pop was Down the Dustpipe while their early progression was heavily influenced by The Doors 'Roadhouse Blues'. ZZ Top's early 70's tracks 'Tush' and 'La Grange' together with Canned Heat's 'On the Road Again' are other good examples which I'm sure influenced them in the early years. As an aside my favourite non-Quo shuffle is Boz Scaggs 'Lido Shuffle', a fantastic example of shuffle rhythm driving on a song. Just my tuppence worth!

A shuffle is basically the Roadhouse blues, break rhs rules, all we really wanna do, whatever you want rhythm.
My favourite bit of all Quo is when 4500 times changes from a regular 4/4 beat to a shuffle (leading to “I sure wanna stay here.....”
Can be fast - I saw the light Can be slow - end of railroad.
Is found in blues and folk music. Mexican hat dance, Irish reels and jigs etc.
Just a foot tapping on the beat rhythm with the emphasis on the downstroke

Are Quo the only major rock band to have added jigs and reels etc ? Seems like the other rock bands of Quo's era played straight blues rock ,but Quo played beefed up 50's rock n roll, but with shuffle, traditional arrangements and a nod to blues rock. I think this explains why other rock music can be soulful or sad etc whereas Quo can offer sheer euphoria
I think it's the happiness of Quo's music that makes me love it more than any other band. The blend of influences are unique

You would have to think that, with Rossi's Irish (jigs and reels) and Italian ('papa piccolino' etc) background, the shuffle groove was in his genes at an early age! What they were listening to in the '69/'70 period (Chicken Shack, Fleetwood Mac etc) only added to the flavour of where their musical tastes derived from and were heading.

Yes I'm aware of the "Celtic rock " genre, not major league rock band stuff though is it? Ah well, now you're into defining what 'major league' is! - Are Quo major league or just 'Big' in Some European countries and [thanks to Brexit] GB.
Btw, Horslips wouldn't have called themselves 'Celtic Rock' - as with so many bands that's a 'handy Label' so that they can be filed under 'Something that'll be consumable in a 'Record' Shop'.

Every damn drummer can play a shuffle lmao It's like if Francis would say that only he and Rick were the only ones that could do a 12 bar blues correctly. Or.. you know, play an open G chord just the right way

Can be fast - I saw the light Can be slow - end of railroad. You could have used Railroad for both cases ahah Though neither of I Saw The Light and the first part of Railroad is particularly fast. Quo could go into a fast shuffle, as they showed us on Mean Girl, Tune To The Music and Down The Dustpipe.

Of course other drummers can play the shuffle and yes it's an ego thing on JC's part to say that but, no one plays the shuffle how he does and Pete,Jeff,Matt and Leon, as brilliant as they are, couldnt do what JC done and I love the others! Btw, if you want narcissism, have a read of Francis' book. Never known a guy to blame everything else but himself for his issues. It's pathetic
