In the early 70s, they were all equals; by the mid 80s, Francis & Rick had become the more public face of the band, having sung lead on pretty much all hit singles between them. Ergo they were unlikely to bring in a "big name" bass player at that point. So, if not Rhino, the other "who" would've been somebody else not really known at that time. All IMHO of course. Maybe why they hired that weird stiff looking guy on the RAOTW video... did the job but zero character. Aye, maybe a little too highly strung to get the job permanently

Would have loved to seen John Entwhistle , Neil Murray , Cliff Williams fill in for Alan .

The music business is an uncertain business to be in. One thing that must be true is that Rhino has probably made more money out of Quo than Alan ever did.
Although Alan must be magnanimous towards Rhino. I can’t help wondering there must be a bit of ill feeling hiding somewhere.
I think Alan and John must have appreciated the FF reunion. It would have topped up their pensions a bit.

As for possible replacements back then, I think Rhino (and Jeff) were just handy having been involved with Rick's solo project. Plenty good rock bassists around in 1986 I'd have thought, with the heavy metal boom long behind them. Always found it interesting that they just didn't turn to Andy. It was his main instrument of choice after all. But the promotion changed overnight and it became the whole crossed guitars thing; basically, the Francis and Rick band. Certainly for marketing purposes. A 'name' bassist would have put paid to all of that.

Aye, they could have kept Pete on, switched Andy to bass & just recruited a keyboard player - probably not Rick Wakeman though!

Weren't Neil Murray & Cozy Powell rumoured as a new rhythm section at one point. I'm sure I saw something regarding Murray at some point as he'd spent some time with Rick during John's Diesel project? I could be spouting absolute bollocks though 😁

Jack Bruce would have done a great job. At least, nobody would be arguing with him! Seriously, they would need to audition lots of players and find someone new who could hit a hard downstroke, invent harmonies and wouldn't argue wtih Francis. and they simply were not going to do that. The integrated-band, self produced, get together with a tune and hit it phase of Quo had gone and was notgoing to come back. I wouldn't have understood that then, but I do now. The live experience was the same for me, I had no image issues ... but somewhere deep in the marrow I missed Alan's bass. But I said to Rhino (the only thing I ever said to Rhino, and the only thing worth saying) "You have the best job in the world and I hope you are the last person to have it." * I don't think chopping and changing line ups is good for a band, usually.
(*For avoidance of doubt, that means "Unless Alan should chance to come back one day". I think I said that too.)

This was the 80s, no way that would've happened. Heck they apparently even considered a 2nd keyboard player for the new songs! Though having a non-Andy add-on keyboard player and Andy tied to bass might have cleaned up the songs that didn't originally have keys. Sort of like on the Live album.

Doubt anyone could realistically replace AL. Replacements for JC didn't quite measure up either. Think many underestimated the importance of JC to the overall vibe of the band. Certainly AL's contributions to the band were underestimated by many including the current bassist.
Look at it this way. Nobody could adequately replace AL. So why not throw anyone in.Which is pretty much what they did. Threw in a session musician. Hey it worked for Led Zep. Think how much better Quo could be. It didn't work for Quo but it didn't destroy them either. They were weakened but they did manage to carry on which wouldn't have been the case without a replacement for Al as FR would have continued to refuse to work with him.

I tend to mostly agree with this. Not because no one could be as good as Alan, no doubt there are technically better bass players, but simply because no matter who would have stepped in, it would never bring the magic back that the four originals formed. Status Quo was th sum of the four original members and changed the moment that John stepped out and that magic was lost and never returned and the same thing would have happened if it would have been any of the original four stepping out

Yes the dreaded Quo keys. Listen to some of the reunion gigs astounds me how good Quo sound without keyboard noises.Sounds different and so much better at least Imo.
When listening to solo works from Francis, Rick or Andy is so different to listening to Quo music. Had to have been AL keeping the music on a straight and narrow course. And JC too. Because when it came to voting on what music etc to use AL and JC were known to vote similarly to each other.
Yet AB's keyboard playing is amazing in itself. So good yet unfortunately so not needed on much of Quo's work.

Ah I had no problems with the keys in itself until they got used the wrong ways...hell of a difference for instance between Dreaming where I hate them and Umleitung where I love them

no one was ever going to replace alan and not cop some flack.he was in cricket terms a great allrounder. he helped build the band to what it became and that can never be disputed. cheers
