The thing is there is so much snobbery in music. Down Down, Caroline, Whatever You Want probably amongst the best singles ever to hit the charts to get you going at a party. I don't care whatever other bands do there was nothing like a bit of Quo to give you goosebumps. If you were into Floyd Quo would not have been cool..but Floyd don't get my heart pumping or make me want to be reflective. They might be amongst the best musicians on the planet for some but i am not a musician. I play air guitar still and at school dabbled with the Triangle. Give me something instant like Jump by Van Halen or Highway to Hell by ACDC any day of the week. But then again you will find me turning up T REX, Bay cIty rollers through to Queen ELO and then onto Abba and still futher onto Last Christmas by Wham ..i simply don't care. The other great think about Quo was the odd reflective gem like A Year, Lonely Man. Then you also have unusual Quo..Accident Prone,Living on an Island and Who Gets The Love. Then still further of course there is Forty Five Hundred Times, Slow Train and Breaking Away.

freewilly Do you mean Brian? I saw yet another poll where he'd come top recently, I also saw another one who said it was Jimi Hendrix. On the hair front you could always do a Francis and go for the ponytail and ribbon bow, or A Ritchie and get some "assistance" Oh no, not Brian! I was referring to Page. My Fedora will cover it up for now
Ah. MY favourite.
For some reason I don't understand, he had just a few short years of being brilliant, and then never did anything fresh again. His bits with Zep are still my favourite though.

I've come a bit late to this and reading through I had the revelation that maybe it wasn't the music at all ... the press thing was there well before punk, I was aware of it and I wasn't even a fan. I really didn't care because I read the music papers all the time and I knew there was this undertow of sneery stuff from a few writers, but not from most of them. I don't know where it started (I just read an old article on Firefox Pocket about the real original of "OK" and that started as a minor in-joke that just cropped up at the right moment. I suspect the same thing happened with the "three chords"). I have a suspicion that it was originally about the band's trademark formation dancing and hair tossing. (Not to mention loads of fans who did the same thing.) Francis said way back even his bro baited him about that. The three chords was just another handy thing in the mix. Nobody got baited for being an honest to goodness pub band. And they were successful, which made them a target for any low level journalistic gun-slinger who wanted to prove himself.

Ah no, Page was great. Just, there were times where he was very sloppy when playing live. I think everyone knows that

David has an amazing guitar tone and is a great soloist but he's the first to admit that he's not really fast and there are some things he can't play. Like Quo, they gelled together well as a group and managed to come up with a distinct sound/identity in spite of their limitations. See this live recording which always makes my jaw drop with how heavy it gets compared to the relatively tame studio original . Nick was a real animal on drums back then! (And very good at the shuffle too.) Long story short, I love both Quo and Floyd - but can't stand Jump or Highway to Hell

I like the vast majority of Quo's albums and maybe half of Pink Floyd's output, although that half are admittedly brilliant. There are certain albums by Floyd I just can't get into. But there's nothing wrong with that. Perfectly normal I'd have thought. Can't like everything by everyone. But maybe at least something by almost everyone Snobbery in music - or any art form - is just stupid. But even I find myself indulging in it from time to time. Must be human nature. I've been watching the old "Top of the Pops" broadcasts on a Friday night and we're currently on 1990. Some of the stuff on it was OK but some of it made me wince. But at least there was variety. Last night we had Inspiral Carpets, Snap and Jason Donovan via Madonna and Alannah Myles. And some UK Eurovision entry pi$h. See what I mean?

The Quo marketing was all about us being a close knit family with the band and F..k everyone else sort of thing. At least that’s what I felt they were saying to me back in the 70’s. I went along with it and we all did. It was clever as it made us probably the most loyal passionate fans around. My only regret was I went around with long hair wearing Clogs and Quo satin Tour jackets for what should have been years chasing chicks 😂 I guess I was not the only only. I see on eBay people are still buying those old Tour Jackets. What on earth for 🤷♂️

Must have hampered your progress slightly?

Yeah the first black one with the ‘ Fabulous’ nose face on the back 😂 Came out 1979. Felt like the bees knees when that arrived. Lol. There is one thing I wish I never got rid of though because my Mother put hours in Stitching it. Was a Wrangler Denim waistcoat with Status Quo in white thread on the back in the Exact font. Then she stitched in various colours the Piledriver Gorrila copied from the gatefold of the album underneath the wording. It also had a couple of patches on the front as well. One was definitely the hello patch.
If anybody has it I would love to buy it back for sentimental reasons as my Mother now 80 has advanced Alzheimer’s! Happy days thinking back though,

I had to think hard about that. I don't remember there being times when I was sitting there going "Oh don't be so sloppy Jimmy" but on reflection I do remember thinking that there are times I want a band to play that bit right, because it's good ( x ref. "Don't mess aroun' with Roll Over Lay Down" ), and I thought they were too off the rails, ie, sloppy. But my main ire was directed at Robert, who tends to fill in bits with meaningless baby babies etc when he gets bored. I didn't know anything about guitar beyond D major and E minor then, so as long as he was making a good noise and (important to anyone who was one day going to be a true Quo fan) keeping the tempo up, I wasn't much bothered. Making a good noise was what they were all about. My favourite guitar bit was White Summer, and as that was solo, he did have to do it right ...

I reckon Gilmore gets the most dollars per note of any guitarist ever in the history of the world. And a shining example of how a great musician does not have to be a "speed king." There are lots of shredders out there, and not many Gilmores.

All those guitarists mentioned would admittedly bow down and admit back in the day in a certain period Peter Green was the untouchable one. The perfect master of less is more. And he could really sing !
