OK, so we all know that Pete fitted right into the band, but who else could have replaced John?
I read that Dire Straits and Dave Edmunds drummer Terry Williams was considered. Reckon he would have been a fantastic choice - look at the energy here!
Other candidates from the era?

I’m guessing it all boils down to how well they nail the cowbell.🧐

There was an interview with Jeff Rich where he said that when he left he suggested the great Terry Williams would be ideal. But for some reason or other it never happened.

Think he joined straits in 82/3 ? Not sure. I know Mark Knopfler was not happy with his drums on the multi multi platinum ‘ Brothers in Arms ‘ and had 99% replaced by another Drummer. Think he still stayed as a member with them for a couple of years afterwards.

He was unfortunately having a few personal issues at that time but Simon King would have otherwise been a sound choice. Hard-hitting, straightforward, knew his way around a shuffle (see 'Orgone Accumulator' for evidence) and had staying power on lengthy songs - ticks all the requisite Quo boxes!

Wasn't Matt brought in by Rhino or have I dreamt this? lmao I've never liked Pete, don't know why. Jeff was great, Matt was great Leon is the best fit of them though imo

Choosing a successor for JC would be like doing the same for Charlie Watts or Mick Fleetwood, impossible to please the majority of fans as the drum sound was so much the foundation of the band's sound. Pete was ideal, totally different in style but experienced and superb live. Jeff Rich was a total mismatch, wrong style entirely and made no effort to fit in with what fans wanted, which to his credit Rhino has to some extent done over the years. The band were on their knees live by the time he left. Matt was excellent, his own man, a great rock drummer, such a shame Francis didn't realise what an asset he had. Leon for the first few years was very much the journeyman but the last few tours he's been on fire live. Really seems to have got to grips with the groove needed to fit Quo's sound. He really has grown into his role as Richie is doing.
As for other replacements straight after John I would say Phil Rudd but Quo didn't have the international profile to land someone of his calibre. Mickey Barker from Magnum would have been superb, first rate live and great in session work.

Mad to think there were 200 or so drummers in the frame. A mate of mine drummed for a metal band called Handsome Beast's, he tried but didnt get an audition. Anyone know how many got a trial? Get the impression Pete was favoured due to being easy going, probably thr best choice for the chaos around

Although John is still my favorite, Pete was for me without a doubt the best one after John and he blended in to the band best of all that came after John. I saw him live a few times in the eighties and he could bang those drums live !

If considering what if scenarios, what if Ozzy had played Reading '80 & therefore Slade's career resurrecting performance hadn't occurred & they'd broken up instead. Firstly, Noddy may have taken the job with AC/DC after all. Would Quo have considered Don Powell as replacement for JC? If they had, would we possibly have seen Jimmy Lea subsequently lined up to replace AL? I think I recall reading that the latter idea was a consideration at the time anyway.

Always thought Pete's drumming somehow made Quo sound boring, almost to the extent of it sounding like how people used to mock the Quo sound...
dun da dun da dun da dun......
Jeff not being a perfect fit's exactly what they needed after the early 80s tours which again to me always sounded a bit slow and no real excitement. Jeff completely re-energised the band live.
