Wait, is this the version that comes in the Live At The BBC and on the Piledriver Deluxe edition? It sounds better and it's funnier! Why wasn't it released like this?

Comes from a cassette copy, from memory... unedited w/ extra bits. I've also got the Radio 1 Advert for the In Concert broadcast, but that was captured by a bootlegger at the time.

Maybe it's my memory, my ears or the fact I'm only after waking up but...
Is it me or does Rick sound in tune here, whilst on the official release, he sounds totally off key?
If so, what the fuck?

Me and a schoolmate listened to the original broadcast and he 'taped' it onto one of those new fangled portable cassette players. How, I have no idea, but he was a bit of a wiz with things like that. We played it endlessly thereafter. This certainly sounds like it with all it's lovely bum notes here and there and Francis's rambling introduction. I see that it was recorded on 1 March 1973. I'm almost certain (almost ) that it was broadcast after that. We saw the band on 22 March 1973 and it was after that I'm sure. I thought the following Saturday but maybe someone can put me right. It was a feckin' long time ago! Good to hear it again actually. I've never really ploughed through all the Live at the BBC stuff. Just chosen bits and pieces.

Brilliant, my favourite Quo track (probably). Rossi's accent at the start sounds so much like Ronnie O'Sullivan! .
Thanks for the link.

I can hear some differences too, I didn't notice the off key bits, but I can hear more present one guitar that I never hear (official or bootleg releases from the original broadcast), and, I don't know, something else it's different. Strange...

I’ve still got one of the original cassette copies of this. When I heard the version on the official release on that 8cd set of BBC stuff I thought HELLO. This sounds different. Almost like somehow it’s been auto tuned and definitely polished from a production aspect. The cassette copy is very much raw but sounds like an audience recording probably on a cheap dodgy cassette player ! Wish they’d left all the banter in on the official release !

Whilst everyone is on the topic of live audio being tampered with... go and have a listen to the Marquee Club, 28th November 1972 version of Paper Plane and you'll hear two vocal tracks for Rossi - one of which being the studio vocal track from Piledriver.

Which one? I only know this: (this one is bloody fantastic)
Does seem double tracked. And near the 30 seconds mark you can hear vocal harmonization even though Rick is not singing.
And the version that ended as Paper Plane video, where the whole audio was replaced by the album track.

Yeah definitely added in after. There is no way Quo live played to the exact tempo of the studio recording. Analogue wise would have been impossible back then with adrenaline flowing ! They most likely wouldn’t have been able to hear it. I even think I can hear a bit added to the guitar solo as well from the studio version. Just slightly ! I think this is probably a recent addition with all the digital know how available now.
