@bluehighway
How about some rock and roll stories from the road for the weekend?

I've led an innocent and blameless life! I even once shared a dressing room with Nana Mouskouri.

No she was more a fan of speed. I'm doing a gig in Berlin tonight, I'll see if I can think of anything funny and not libellous over the weekend.

Not an anecdote, I'll try and get to that tomorrow when I have some time but this was last night in Berlin, the new reality of playing to a relatively small audience of 5000. Gates open two and half hours before showtime to allow socially distanced groups of four to enter and then a very slow departure after the gig.

Even the musicians are respecting social distancing rules on stage? These days, the Quo stance would be illegal.

@bluehighway,
Tell us a story of what would have been my lifetime ambition.... being on the road . Just like the tour bus scene from Bohemian Rhapsody....
The closest I’ve got to living that dream is getting a lift to the next village so we can do a gig in the British Legion for £20.
😭
The Quo numbers always go down well though.
😀🎸🎸

Apologies for the delay but I had some time with my daughter who lives in Berlin and I bought a new car. Memories of touring, well what you have to remember is the Rising line up was actually formed in 75 and we were touring the first album that only Ritchie and Ronnie had played on. As per usual Ritchie had fired the other three, I only got the job as he was recording demos in California in the next studio to where I was recording with my previous band Blessings. He liked my work, I'd been a fan of Purple and about 2 days after my 22nd birthday I was in Rainbow. We then had just a week to rehearse the set before our first gig in Canada and then one immediately after in New York. Initially we were all on a high, new band, huge publicity and it was all about the music. Huge amounts of alcohol and Jimmy Bain's "wee toots" kept us pretty high too. That American tour we were supported by Argent who I learned Ritchie had hired as they wouldn't outplay us, insecurity has always been his middle name. UFO and Steppenwolf also did a few gigs. Once the tour got going the band effectively split in two, Ronnie, Jimmy and I would party together, Ritchie and Cozy were pretty aloof. For me it was a dream come true, playing to sold out concert halls and theatres , I was given a blank cheque to buy equipment, you needed so much as synths were so basic then. Parties every night, girls galore, Jimmy and I were the hearthrobs for the rock chicks and playing a few gigs home in California was really amazing. My mom and dad came to watch and were grudgingly complimentary. We toured to Christmas 75 then in the new year reconvened in Munich to record Rising. This would set in progress me being fired and rehired twice before I finally walked and what turned out to be my musical future after I left Rainbow, buying a recording studio in Tutzing which led to my still on going collaboration with Peter Maffay and Leslie Mandoki, who both own studios there too. It was the fact that Munich was a weekend escape for many Brit rock stars that led to friendships with Rick , Jon Lord, Freddie and Roger from Queen. But that was after the tumultuous recording of Rising and the bad tempered tour that followed.

Great story! Thanks.
We are looking for a keyboard player for our band...
The pay is a free pint from the bar and a share of £100.
Cheers 🍻

madturk That sounds like the early days with Blessings. We would literally play any bar or music club that would pay us. Mostly that would just cover our travel costs but not a motel for the night so we often slept in the car in parking lots but we were just so determined to get noticed and get a recording deal. That finally worked but the guy who signed us was a complete shyster and the deal left us with practically nothing. It was that really that led me to leave and accept Ritchie's offer. Luckily I'm still good friends with the guys from Blessings. 4th Chord Thanks. I get banned from Lidl on new bargains day yet Marion was fine with a car. I fail to understand ladies sometimes.

If Ritchie hadn’t spotted you way back then in the next studio then you’d never have been taken on that fantastic experience with Rainbow... although it has its dark side with a dominant Mr Blackmore. But hopefully you’re in a satisfying environment now. Sliding doors eh, if you weren’t in neighbouring studios back when you were a 22 year old, may have been a very different life. btw... what new car did you buy?

Gaz Very true, I often wonder what I'd be doing if fate had been different, one of the guys from Blessings is still performing around California so I could have been doing that or possibly followed my brother's example and become a teacher. I have done occasional university teaching in composition in Germany and Norway over the years. Certainly the move to Germany was the best thing I ever did. Musical freedom and the chance to work with some incredibly talented musicians. The car is a 55 Buick Roadmaster, almost the same vintage as me and an early birthday present to myself. I hope things with your mum are improving and the rest of the family are ok, especially your daughter.
