Quo had a lot of issues in the States back in the mid 70s. They never got the airplay like The Stones, Zepplin & Floyd. They wouldn’t employ an American manager or producer. Record companies wanted to clean their sound up & Quo refused on all fronts. They were also probably straight down the line for the American audiences, no razzmatazz & very British. Bands like Floyd, Queen & The Stones we’re caviar rock n roll, Quo were fish & chips of rock n roll. A street band who could never be categorised. A missed opportunity for the masses in the States! If Quo would’ve been at the same level in the States as the rest of Europe, Asia & Scandinavia they would’ve been arguably the biggest band in the world, during the mid to late 70s.

That HuffPost article is interesting, but there are some errors. Pye didn't sign Quo after POMM and In My Chair was by no means a big hit.

Nice photo of Rory Gallagher chatting to John Coughlan (maybe others) inside the gatefold sleeve of OTL. Looks as if its during the 1974 US tour as are some of the other photos used. Not to turn this thread into a why they didn't make it in the US one, but it was probably confusing for many US audiences to not be able to focus on a main singer/frontman with Quo, as all three sang their sections at the time. Just a small observation perhaps. Also the irony of two UK blues/boogie bands touring the US in the 70s, Quo and Foghat. Whereas Quo ultimately failed to establish a presence, Foghat became resident and built up quite a successful career there. Small breaks in luck and timing made all the difference back then.

I think it was the board I used to be on before this, somebody posted a fantastic blog by an American guy who met Quo at a hotel on a US tour. In great detail he described getting stoned with them in Francis room. No idea how I'd ever find it again. Other than that there's the couple of anecdotes in the autobiography, but that's about it. Luckily i bookmarked it years ago (if it is the one you're thinking of)...
That's a great story! I recollect another detailed post that I think was in America.... It focussed more on Rick demanding someone's jeans that had patches....

Never heard of this Foghat. Is it worth looking up?

They're not too shabby. Foghat Live is a good starting point. (I didn't bother buying the other albums.)

I know I read it somewhere....

Here's an extract from an interview with International Musician, April 1975 were Francis talks about the U.S. 1974 Tour...
"The last American trip we did, we were being hassled to go on, the gear got there late, they have these strange union rules stopping you putting gear on stage at certain times, all this cobblers. Everything was late, the tune-up was late and then we couldn't get things in tune. We got on stage, we'd had no sound check, and it was all arse upwards. When we first got there it was a shitty sound but it had that thing, that fight. Everybody was feeling 'Oh fuck it, we'll do it, we'll get there'. It turned out a great gig for us."

Sadly, too many Americans are flat out idiots. But that was a great article.

A guy from Atlanta, Georgia, has the following view of seeing Quo live in the US during the 1976 tour (quoted from forums.stevehoffmann.tv): "They were fairly popular in St. Louis. If you saw them live in their hey day, that might change how some think of them. They sold out back to back concerts in the 70's opening up for Wishbone Ash. I am a big fan of WA and Quo blew them off the stage both nights! Yes they were that good live with that core lineup. Pure power that could pin you up against the wall."

This is an interesting photo taken from John Coghlan's facebook page, showing the band in California or Florida (maybe) in 1974. Apparently Rick has a t-shirt and Alan has a magazine supporting a Dutch radio station 'Veronica' which was being closed down. I hope Rossi didn't go on stage in that gear!!!
