I've always been fascinated with Quo's tours of the US between 1973 and 1976, obviously set up to try and break them into the lucrative US music market, after their successes in the UK and Europe. However there seems to be very little stories, photos, anecdotes, reminiscences about travelling round the States, supporting various acts, occasionally headlining a show. Did Rick or Francis ever discuss their times there? So, just wondering if there are any tales to be told, videos to watch etc. about that period of their gigging lives. In fact, and despite searching, I havn't come across one clip of Quo on stage in the US - unless someone knows differently! Any interesting info out there?

There doesn't seem to be much. The one that's often repeated is when they played (or were supposed to play; not sure which) a venue where the crowd were expecting Fleetwood Mac but got Stretch or something like that. I can't remember the exact story but I've read a couple of variations on it.
And, of course, America is where Francis has always said that the harder drugs started.

Ah! So the thread title is not indicative of a forthcoming box set of hitherto unknown live material

I think it was the board I used to be on before this, somebody posted a fantastic blog by an American guy who met Quo at a hotel on a US tour. In great detail he described getting stoned with them in Francis room. No idea how I'd ever find it again.
Other than that there's the couple of anecdotes in the autobiography, but that's about it.

There is footage of them in America, from 1972, but you wont find it anywhere online

The Steve Hoffmann music forum (discussed on this site before) has an amazing pictorial section with photos and images of hundreds of bands throughout the 60s/70s and 80s. Its incredible that no one thought of taking a few shots of Quo on stage somewhere in the US. And if they did they certainly havn't surfaced since!!

Great photos Quoincidence and thanks for posting. Just what we want to see. Quo were supporting Ted Nugent over two nights in Santa Monica. Were you there? If so what was the gig like.

I wasn't, as I wasn't born until 1997 But I've read from people that did attend Quo shows in the US, where the band received little to no fanfare when they walked on stage. This is a comment that was posted on my YouTube channel; "Mid 70's Michigan Palace Theatre! Three bands, five bucks! Rush, Kansas and Status Quo! Very next week, Heart, Kansas and Status Quo! These guys came out with no fanfare, almost completely unknown to Detroit, in front of a beat up wall of Sound City amps! Forever changed my life!" Here are a couple US Tickets also

Great story Gav. Thanks for saving and posting. The following are details of the gig taken from quogigography.net: 23-06-1973; USA, New York - Academy Of Music (with Savoy Brown, Manfred Mann & ELO). So slightly later in the year than the writer recalled. Its a small but important recollection to have in many ways, seeing as (I'm sure) Francis memories from the time are probably non-existent at this stage! Quo toured with Rory Gallagher a lot around the US in the 1970s. Maybe Gallagher blogs and websites might have one or two nuggets. Must investigate.

Although I think Quo are a great band, I’ve always seen them as a lower tier band. I do not mean this in a derogatory way. I mean that they are not in the same category as Sabbath/Zep/Floyd/Stones. All those other British bands had success in America. They are all household names in America.
Maybe as those other bands had American success earlier than Quo attempted it, there was not as much appetite for another British rock band. Who knows.....
I suppose they tried but it wasn’t to be. It must have been a huge disappointment. That’s a lot of money to miss out on.
I hope nobody thinks I’m disrespecting Quo when I say they are not in the same high category as Floyd.
But David Gilmour raised £20 million from a guitar auction and Francis Rossi made £100K.
