Funny isn't it how the fortunes of rock stars fluctuate. I was quite shocked to see David Coverdale's lowly placing on the bill

I think Coverdale was just transitioning from being a solo artist supported by his White Snake band, so-called after his first solo lp, to fronting the band Whitesnake whose Snakebite ep was released the same month as this Festival. I had the pleasure of seeing them at Reading Festival the following year - they were much higher up the bill by then.

That's actually a better line up than the Castle Donington one 4 years later. For me anyway. I've got singles by No Dice and Atlanta Rhythm Section going way back and I vaguely remember Jane. German I think. I saw David Coverdale that year as well, at Edinburgh Odeon, although by then it was billed as Whitesnake. Supported by Magnum (wasn't everyone for about 5 years? )
