Favourite Quo Album: On The Level

If Quo are a live band, and a consistent, prolific and great one, surely it figures that this album is the ultimate, definitive Quo album?

Personally not for me. Much prefer the Studio albums. The Live album for me did not match actually seeing them live back then if that makes sense. Maybe the mastering but it’s got a muffled tone to my ears and doesn’t resemble what they actually sounded like. The Live EP was nearer the Mark to me. In my view they made a mistake with The set list order considering it was being committed to vinyl. Side one is just way too unbalanced with the first 4 songs All featuring Alans vocals. I think if they Had swapped ITABW For something featuring either a Francis or Rick Vocal it would have balanced it far better. Proof of the pudding is sadly that Lizzy’s double live album is held in higher regard when really Quo should have blown it a way but it didn’t !

Yes! A band at the height of their powers both live and in the studio. A killer setlist, though the running order could have been more balanced as blagult says. For the time it was recorded and the tech available then I think the sound and quality is pretty good. As for Lizzy's Live and Dangerous, it should really have been called Overdubbed Rerecorded and Tame. Rather less of the live and more of a certain studio in Paris.

Piledriver is the defining album, and to a lesser extent Hello!
I don't think the live albums really defined them at the time because they were already huge in stature and live reputation..
The reputation is gone. Live! serves as the evidence that they were great

Probably not for me, great as it is. You're no doubt fed up hearing it but I was at the Apollo gigs and it was impossible to physically capture what it was like. I've never experienced anything like it since. But, although those of us of a certain vintage didn't realise it at the time, it signalled the end of an era; the era that defined them. And that was the 5 albums from Piledriver to Blue For You. No one of them defines the band in the 70's; they all do. Having said that, although I've enjoyed other live albums more (admittedly, not many!), most I've read since have been heavily over-dubbed. That puts Quo's out there on it's own.

It’s all subjective really the classic period is probably the definitive period for a lot of fans Cheers

In the general public's eye, it can't be, because some of the band's biggest hits (RAOTW, WYW, WYP, ITAN) all happened afterwards.
In summing up the 70s up until that point, it's hard to beat. And some of the songs actually sound better than the studio versions IMO, Little Lady and 4500x are prime examples.

With 4500x, I can understand, due to that feedback and all. But what is it about the studio recording of Little Lady? On the album version, you can clearly hear each instrument. But, at the same time, they are all glued together.

I would say yes its the defining album. It's the one album just about all Quo fans owned. In my experience we all had a few of their studio albums and borrowed or saved up for the ones we hadn't yet bought. It captures the essence of what you got when you saw them live.

Yes it is the defining Quo album. Like others I see it as the closing chapter of the golden era. I still play it at a skull shattering volume and still get great enjoyment from it. There's been nothing quite like it since.... until the reunion tours

For me, it's the Ultimate Quo album. I played it over and over [ad infinitum...almost!] in our old front room many moons ago, always all 4 sides and I never felt anything less than elated afterwards.
There's nothing near it in Quo's canon - even the FF's 13/14 Reunion [though, tbh - that does come v.close] For sure it's a desert island disc for me.

Recorded with incredible timing. The set list is perfect. They might have been just as good a few years later but the set list was never at this level until the reunion.

Ive never got the love for Live! I really don't like the guitar sound, and they crowd are too quiet. Im not fussed on mistakes and all that, as that's live music, but overall I just dont understand what's so great about it.
