This just came on my mp3 player for the first time in a wee while. I'd forgotten how much I like it.
I know it's a demo and the sound quality reflects that but, tidied up a little and staying faithful to the arrangement, this could've been close to the best slow song Quo ever recorded.
I presume it's a Rossi/Young composition. Wonder why they never properly recorded it. Shame.
Incidentally, coming up as Shifting Sands on my mp3 but listed as Shifting Sand in my iTunes library. Can't remember which it is. Although it's academic really.

Enjoyed that. The first few bars sounding almost movie soundtrack in style. My mind started to wander a little as the track progressed as treading a samey path and perhaps something more dramatic and contrasting, the bridge or whatever you want to call it, would have been welcome.

mortifiedI think that's the actual song, rather than a demo, with it having strings etc. It just comes from a bad source, more than likely an acetate.

From memory, I'm sure it was used in Hello Quo when Rick was talking about his childhood

I'm not sure if I've heard that before. The presence of the Little Nasal Whine, now somewhat eclipsed, doesn't hurt at all. There's a shade of You Let Me Down (one of my favourite Quo Slow songs) there somewhere. That orchestra sounds like it might be a Mellotron, slightly under-used. I always liked Mellotrons.

It is indeed Rossi/Young, from 1971.
Total speculation, but wonder if this was a demo for a publishing company, meant, eventually, to be recorded by someone else?
Sounds very unlike the direction they were going in at the time. Would love to know the history of this one. Shame it fades early - wonder why.

Forgotten about this
It sounds unfinished to me, perhaps the band didn't rate it highly
Don't know if any band member was ever asked about it.
When this surfaced on the old board lots of fans suggested the band should rerecord it. Then again, it wouldn't have fitted well on backbone or other recent albums. HT yes, but even there you let me down didn't make the album
