Possibly the weakest Monsters of Rock of all.... the only real challenger was when ZZ Top headlined.

Personally I thought the line up was rather good, horses for courses and all that. I enjoyed the day out, but I cant really remember the Quo performance that well as I saw them so many times that year they all intermingle into one. Apart from the `Charlie` NEC gig obvs. Some say on here Quo were not up their usual form that night, I take their word for it!

Still got the t-shirt, which is now just a little snug and, for some inexplicable reason, two programmes I think one must've been my sister's. I didn't mind the line up but I'd seen the main acts so many times before. Gillan and Saxon were pretty much on the wane because the NWOBHM was coming to an end but they were both still half decent. Anvil I never took to, nor Hawkwind. And Uriah Heep, even then, I felt had been around for ages. I thought Quo were poor by their standards but still blew everyone else off the stage. It was a pretty bleak, wet day for most of it. Plastic pint glasses were being thrown from all angles all day; some of them full of pi$$ so it wasn't a terrific experience all round. We'd travelled overnight to get there at about half six in the morning so I spent about 8 hours sitting about doing fvck all except avoid flying plastic and kidney poisoning After Quo finished, it was back on the bus for another overnight journey home. I was knackered and slept all the next day. My lovely wife at the time made sure my biking jacket and jeans were cleaned up. Everything probably stunk. Strangely, sis went back the next year to see Whitesnake. ZZ Top didn't headline; they were third on the bill behind Meat Loaf I think. So, markquo, if you ever get that time machine; seriously, pick another one

There are a few photos and write-ups on the uk rock festivals.com website.
Looked an interesting bill on paper. Had been keen to see Saxon as we (our band) had their 'Denim and Leather' album on tape in the car and a bit of a soundtrack of a moment in time. First time seeing Gillan as well. I liked the fact they had singles in in the charts in the early 80s, with McCoy on bass.
My main memory of the day (sorry Quo) is seeing Janick Gers running and jumping about all over the shop and making use of the scaffolding!
Mortified summed things up well. Not one of Quo's better days in the office but not terrible by any means. Sound issues on stage particularly and Quo themselves were not happy with their performance. They said they were rusty as came off the road in May '82 and then back at the end of August for a couple of gigs inc Donington.
At least we didn't have as much hanging about for hours as Mortified did, though the journey home seemed to take forever in the early hours, not helped by me taking a wrong turning once off the M1 and we ended up driving aimlessly around Wembley until finding our way again.

Are there any bootlegs from the day? I do have one from the day. Its not the best quality. Hopefully it will be one of the gigs revisited by the lads doing the cleaning up of the boots.

Overall I did three Monsters Of Rock. 1981 with AC/DC headlining, 1982 With Quo headlining and 1985 with ZZ Top headlining. 1985 had a little known band at the time way down on the list.........Metallica!

My time machine would visit Cardiff Castle, The "Live" album recording in Glasgow, Lewisham Odeon 1977, NTL Hammersmith(loudest gig I ever attended) 5th night EOTR Hammersmith and FF 15/3/13. Went to 4 of them and wouldn't mind another go. and FF 15/3/13.
