Hi there,
I have produced a radio documentary due to air this weekend about Richie Malone and his story to becoming a member of Status Quo. I include some info below. Cheers! Heather
"A new documentary exploring the fascinating story of how one Irish, Status Quo fan became a member of the band, will air on RTE Radio 1 Extra this August Bank Holiday.
For this programme, Radio Producer Heather MacLeod got unparalleled access to Dublin musician, Richie Malone, and in the documentary explores his life and story. From his first experience of hearing Status Quo played in the house via his mega fan dad Karl, to performing around the world in venues such as Hyde Park, Wacken Festival and Dublin’s 3 Arena.
Richie talks about everything, from growing up with his dad, the original fan, to his first experience meeting his idol, guitarist, Rick Parfitt, ‘He just couldn’t believe that he was finally meeting someone my age, playing very like him.’ And how a phone call from Status Quo bassist, Rhino, would change his life forever.
Asked what drew her to Richie’s story, producer Heather said ‘I met Richie around 10 years ago when he was in a band called RAID and we got talking about his passion for Status Quo. We bonded over the fact that he was a big follower of Rick Parfitt and had a replica of Rick’s famous, white guitar and my own story that my dad had, in fact, sold Rick that white Telecaster guitar years previous. When I heard a few years later that Richie had started performing with Status Quo, I couldn’t believe it. I just thought, I have to tell his story. As Richie’s close friend Jay says in the programme, “It just has that Hollywood feel about it. Like I said earlier, how many people get to step into their heroes shoes? Not many people get to do it.” And I’d have to agree with that sentiment.’
Along with Richie’s own thoughts and stories, ‘Rockin’ All Over The World’ also features contributions from Status Quo bassist Rhino, Richie’s dad Karl and Richie’s friends and former bandmates Jay and Alan. All of whom consider Richie’s journey and his place in the band.
‘Rockin’ All Over The World’ will broadcast on RTE Radio 1 Extra on Sunday August 2nd at 8pm and be available on podcast thereafter via www.podomatic.com/podcasts/macloudmusic
The programme was made with the support of the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland with the Television License Fee.
