I think it's feedback or tinnitus.

Yes it’s most noticeable between the verses - like I say adds a warmth. Never noticed it in the vinyl but far more apparent on the digital remasters
They don’t do much really - just mainly holding a note to compliment the chords the guitars play

Today I learned there are saxophones on 4500x. The album sleeve credited saxophones but I never, ever heard them until Tim Turan's remastered version seemed to bring them forward in the mix a bit. I now notice them every time.

You can even here saxophones clearly on Blue Eyed Lady.

There are some other songs with "ah"-choirs. Anyone knows if it's melotron on Is There A Better Way (guitar solo part) and Rain (before solo and towards the end, it's also an "uh"-choir there that is easily missed right after the ah when the riff starts again).
I think it is some kind of synth or melotron in Driftin' Away, most noticeable when the second riff starts after about 24 seconds, but present in the verses and riffs between.

I found this ... Quo (1974) Often regarded as one of the group's heaviest albums, "Quo" is a bit of a left-hook from the band. It didn't spawn many singles or fan favourites save for "Break the Rules". Opener "Backwater" incorporates the sounds of a toy piano and of a Mellotron choir. linkAlways heard the melotron (which is also present at the final verse) but never noticed the toy piano pling 'til now.

I noticed the toy piano some years ago for the first time (now I always hear it), but I thought it was a triangle.

There is a similar "ah" part on Where I Am from On The Level. I'd happily wager that these are vocal parts and that the late Bernie Frost is the chap responsible. When Genesis were seeking a replacement for Peter Gabriel at the end of 1975 or thereabouts, Bernie was one of the contenders on their shortlist and next to his name on the list were the words "Status Quo ghosting - big secret!"

I always put some of the high harmony vocals on blue for you down to the influence of Queen the year before.

In an older Quo board, at a time when I was way more active, I once asked a question whether there was some kind of synth playing in the background of Backwater during the solo. The more I listen to it I am convinced it is, and I am even convinced it's a mellotron. It starts right after John hits his drums, with a short, piano-like ping (almost like the intro to Echoes!) and runs under the whole guitar solo. Now, another question would be; who is playing this mellotron? Rick?
Anybody who knows more?
I suppose most of the keyboards in the classic era that weren't done by guest musicians were played by Rick. There is also something going on in the spacey part after the intro that might be a synth or again a mellotron.

It may be a synth but probably not a mellotron.
