In an older Quo board, at a time when I was way more active, I once asked a question whether there was some kind of synth playing in the background of Backwater during the solo. The more I listen to it I am convinced it is, and I am even convinced it's a mellotron. It starts right after John hits his drums, with a short, piano-like ping (almost like the intro to Echoes!) and runs under the whole guitar solo. Now, another question would be; who is playing this mellotron? Rick?
Anybody who knows more?

Are you sure it's not a xylophone?

I found this ... Quo (1974) Often regarded as one of the group's heaviest albums, "Quo" is a bit of a left-hook from the band. It didn't spawn many singles or fan favourites save for "Break the Rules". Opener "Backwater" incorporates the sounds of a toy piano and of a Mellotron choir. link

I wonder also if the choir sounds during the solo are real voices or a mellotron..

Any excuse to put Backwater on again. No idea what I am listening out for, but I'll play it again with a different ear.

The version from the Deluxe Edition really accentuates that choir. Always sounded to me like a mellotron, or something of the sorts, yes. I've also wondered if it was an actual voice choir, at some point, but I'd bet on the mellotron. Often regarded as one of the group's heaviest albums, "Quo" is a bit of a left-hook from the band. It didn't spawn many singles or fan favourites save for "Break the Rules". Opener "Backwater" incorporates the sounds of a toy piano and of a Mellotron choir. Regarding the toy piano, I thought it was some kind of celesta.

Possibly the alto sax. The credits list an alto sax and a tenor sax. They are present until after the 4500x verses. They stop when that guitar and bass duo starts.

It's one of the saxs. Both are playing at the same time, in truth. If you are able to isolate the side channel, it'll be easier to notice them.

The saxes on 4500 times - now I know they are there are really noticeable particularly on the remastered versions. I guess they were Added to fill the middle frequencies with a warm semi distorted sound.
