Was the b side to Paper plane?
Did they re-record it for Hello. The guitars sound more consistent with Hello than Piledriver....
Thanks

Interesting question. The one in Hello! does sound like the rest of the Hello! songs. So how was the B-Side version? The same sound as the Hello! sound? That would have been weird, especially considering the Paper Plane Single was released before Piledriver. The Piledriver Deluxe Edition contains the "BBC Sounds Of The Seventies 1972" rendition of Softer Ride. I was thinking maybe that version was used in the Single. It seems, however, those sessions were recorded in November 20th, 1972. The Single seems to have been released in November 10th, 1972.
I'm intrigued.

After listening to it again, I guess it sounds in between both albums. I also just realized both albums' sound is not that different between some songs.

Piledriver has a fat, distinctive lead sound in some instances:
Unspoken words, paper plane, roadhouse blues, All the reasons
And a more trebley lead sound in say Don’t waste my time, A Year.
Actually A Year isn’t a million miles from Softer Ride I suppose soundwise

Piledriver and Hello! can barely even be classed as sonically different, much is the case with ‘classic’ rock albums pre-punk, disco and new wave.

The lead guitar of Softer Ride may have more of a Hello! tone but on the other hand I think the lead tone of ROLD is more similar to the Piledriver sound. I would say that it is the same amp on both these recordings.
If you listen to the drums of Softer Ride though (especially the cymbals) they are more bright like on Piledriver than the rest of Hello!

It's held up so well, great song. Initially underrated by the band?
Shame it wasn't a single

As far as I know, those BBC versions were very much the same mixes as the official releases, only with some vocals re-recorded and some other things missing (DWMT had no piano if I remember correctly). There was also another session of Softer Ride but that had to be cut from the Piledriver deluxe (it's on the BBC box set). I've always said they should've included it on Hello! instead.
