I put my ipod on shuffle and the album track came on. I danced, boogied (I never was a head banger) around my living room for all my worth. There is so much passion in that song, that even I, as a woman could channel all my frustration into it. And then you have the gentle ending which takes you out of it. Quo at their sublime best.

You're right, this little opus of Rick's has become the stuff of legend.
We all have our favourite eras of Quo styles and sounds but for me with 'Blue For You' they struck a near perfect balance between the rough and the smooth. Possibly doesn't please all in terms of consistency and 'On The Level' had been a tough act to follow on from but there is something about that noise on 'Blue For You' that works.

My favourite! The last track on the last studio album of the classic era, they'd never be (quite) this good again

One of those that the singles buying public would only know the half of The edited version is very good (as is the posing blonde rock star video ), but the full length opus is a wonder to behold. In the days when some album tracks actually had dynamics. Changes in tempo, mood and style; and all in the one song. All that was left behind after Coming And Going in my book. Maybe Riverside at a push. Early 80's in any event. It was brilliant to hear it in the set but (and very much the same with Living On An Island and Down Down) I wish they'd had the balls - and the time - to play the full length versions. Genius!

Now look what you've gone and done. I can't get it back out of my head. The album is out. MS is on full blast and on repeat after repeat. I'm supposed to be winding down with a glass of wine ready to call it a night but nope, here I am now playing air guitar and drooling over the gatefold sleeve of a magnificent album that has stood the test of time. As Lemmy would say 'Quo's best ever track', although it matches 4500 Times in the favourite stakes with me.
Sheer brilliance.

I'll always remember on Rick's tragic passing, that BBC News showed footage from the MS promo. With the couple of minutes his obituary was given, they couldn't have chosen better than him going up and down that guitar neck like there was no tomorrow. It still gives me goose pimples just thinking about it. How anyone can mock them for playing 3 chords is beyond me. That was a masterclass from Rick. Such an underrated musician.

I disagree.. from what I’ve read from his peers, and the Fender company, he was most definitely not underrated but bugger all that it’s the hundreds of thousands of fans of Quo who’ll always have their memories of his rocking presence on the stage. Always gave his all.

That was much the same effect that Proposin' had on me when it came out, that started me thinking I should investigate this Quo thing further. Mystery Song is the better song, though. It always surprises me that it came so late in the day, it sounds like something from their "earlier and best" phase.

I bought this album in Ludgate Hill in my lunch hour the day it was released.Playing The Mystery Song I knew from the way the grooves were on the vinyl it was going to be a three parter.I think the bit after the guitar solo to the resumption of the vocal is the best of Status Quo,they never approached this again.

the full length version on blue for you is the version i wish they would play on the radio stations i listen to on the DAB......slow build up then an explosion of brilliance and just as you get to the end of the aural blitz we get to calm down and relax on the outro.......just awesome

My favourite! The last track on the last studio album of the classic era, they'd never be (quite) this good again Never thought of it like this but it is so true. It was the last song of classic Quo marking a transition to some thing different and they were never that good again on record. Great how they did this with an almost classical multi layered beginning and played out with this also, phasing in to a country vibe...masters at work, although they probably were not aware of this at the time and did not really know that they were doing this or that this marked an end and change in direction. These types of things actually annoyed Francis as he always thought Rick tried to complicate things! Rick apparently complicated Slow Train, Big Fat Mama, 4500 times etc., !!! He even complicated Caroline by adding the power chord introduction and guitar lick (later copied by Apollo 440 'Can't Stop the Rock') (and yet he did not get song writing credit for his contribution to Caroline which transformed it to a different song) Mystery Song was however part of a change ('ring of a change' going through them) and I remember an article in the music papers at the time with Rick and Francis at one of their country piles being interviewed (as the children payed at the pool) and they talked at length about the changes they were intending (and ultimately, unfortunately, transmitted in the Rocking All Over The World travesty/tragedy). Francis wanting to be like the Eagles has a lot to answer for! He did not have this talent. Why was he not happy being Status Quo? He was good at that.

Listening again to Mystery Song and it's gradual build up and then frantic activity and final almost sudden collapse/climax around 5 mins (5.08) I thought that perhaps Quo, given what the song is about, could actually have had 'The Little Death' experience in mind!!
They may be more creative than many people give them credit for.

And State of Quo played the full length version one of the last times I saw them. Bolton somewhere. The area is lost on me but to Mrs Mortified it was a home from home.
Did Let Me Fly as well as I recall. Not relevant here, I know, but it's so good to hear different stuff like that live - and performed very, very well incidentally.

I live the intro of the album version....the quiet build up and gives the familiar opening more impact.
I’ve never been keen on the outro....I’ve never felt that it fitted with what went before .
It’s kind of country....I want to go yee hah and go to a rodeo !
