50 years ago this week Down the Dustpipe charted at no’47 & peaked at no’12. Amazingly this is still Quo’s longest running UK single spending 17 weeks weeks on the charts!

That is amazing. You could have asked all of us here, I wonder who would have known. My guess would have been one of the played to death ones: rockin' or WYW.

Quo singles up to and including 1981, with the number of weeks in the charts:
POMM 12 Ice In The Sun 12 Down The Dustpipe 17 In My Chair 14 Paper Plane 11 Mean Girl 11 Caroline 13 Break The Rules 8 Down Down 11 LIVE! (EP) 8 Rain 7 Mystery Song 9 Wild Side of Life 12 Rockin' All Over The World 16 Again And Again 9 Accident Prone 8 Whatever You Want 9 Living On An Island 10 What You're Proposing 11 Lies/Don't Drive My Car 10 Something 'bout You Baby I Like 7 Rock 'N' Roll 11
'Are You Growing Tired Of My Love' peaked at no.46 including a re-entry in May/June 1969, 3 weeks in the chart.
1969 – the BBC and Record Retailer joined forces to revolutionise the UK’s chart compilation process. The two organisations commission the British Market Research Bureau (BMRB) to compile the UK’s charts on their behalf. These are the first true industry recognised charts and are referred to as the UK’s 'official' charts for the first time.
These charts were initially compiled from a panel of 250 record shops, who would log their sales by hand and submit their totals by post.
Plenty of room for errors in different ways, I would say!

First song I ever heard by Quo. It was on the radio constantly. I was too young for Pictures of Matchstickmen and all that stuff. Tony Blackburn used to have to play it and he hated it. He even said so live on air. Dick'ead I loved it then and I love it now. My mum actually bought me the single when we were on holiday in Spain so it has a Spanish pic sleeve and is called Por La Tuberia Just a little bit of Mortified family history there, free of charge

Suddenly decided to know more about that single and visited wiki. I had been wondering about the lyrics, seems they were written by an Australian. Jewish, with the references to the "kosher cowboy" and "the shape of my nose". But for "the dustpipe" I can't find any translations. It seems to be a metaphor for dusty road, they're rolling down with their pick-up. Is it that steep hill you sometimes see in American movies, where car races are held (Grease, …) or is it some dusty tunnel near New Orleans?

Yeah, the lyrics seem a bit odd and I always wondered what the veiled Jewish references were all about. Not wishing to be too stereotypical but the composer has a Jewish sounding name. But I don't know anything about him. The John David of his day?

But I don't know anything about him. The John David of his day? I've been in blissful ignorance of that....and I've never previously realised I don't know what a dustpipe is!! Shows how important the lyrics usually are to me!]

Really interesting. Can anybody post the sales for each single?

Are You Growing Tired Of My Love would probably have sold enough to be no.1 these days!

The 2 Quo singles that charted the longest, Down The Dustpipe 17 week and Rockin' All Over The World 16 weeks, were not written by the band!! Quo have had a single peak at every position in the UK Top 10 except number 6. In the album charts, Quo have had an album peak in every position in the UK Top 10.

Are You Growing Tired Of My Love would probably have sold enough to be no.1 these days! Gav will tell you 'tired of love' is a rather obscure sexual act involving a tire iron, a tie dye spray bottle and migrating foul. Personally I'm more of a dustpipe man myself.
