Did any of the Quo hits ever appear on the TOP OF THE POPS albums, where session musicians would cover the hit singles. I vaguely remember Paper Plane being covered on one of the 1973 releases. Oh yeah, I remember those. Cheapo albums on a rack in the local Co-op or Woollies. With a fetching young thing, probably in hot pants, on the cover I can't remember if a Quo song ever appeared on any. But you've just reminded me of something that was a very distant memory somewhere in the depths of this very strange brain of mine. I recall seeing a TV advert, probably in the spring of 1973 for a compilation album that included Paper Plane. One of the reasons it sticks is because there was a brief snippet of Quo during the advert as they gave you the content and I used to get very excited seeing it. I have no idea where the footage was taken from so this is obscure stuff and it only lasted a matter of seconds. But this was way before the days of the Now.... albums. Funny how threads can prick a long, lost memory. Can I say prick?

The album had Paper Plane, together with, Blockbuster, Daniel, Me & Mrs Jones, a Gary G*****r hit, Part of The Union, Sylvia, Doctor My Eyes, Roll Over Bathoven amongst others.

My sister getting the latest 'Top of The Pops' covers album every Christmas was as traditional as having Turkey every Christmas in our house!
Though for some reason, my brother and myself found them curiously interesting...funny that.
This thread has been a memory jog and we definitely had the one which included Quo's Rockin' All Over The World. I gather there is also a very early one that had 'In My Chair' on it.
Perhaps Marc Bolan had shares in Hallmark as T Rex tracks appear quite a bit on the albums in the early years!!

The Now.... albums started in the 80's but I guess if you were a kid and mum was strapped for cash, these would have done. I think we all had 'em in our house in the 70's. They were sometimes the only compilation of hits you could buy. Now, of course, the compilation is king.

There was a point where I could’ve papered the walls in my house with the amount of them lying about. Would’ve made for rather eye-catching walls now that I think of it...

Re Break the Rules, just checked Lee Hawkin's website on Quo's gig history and he shows that Quo were touring the UK in May '74. So, it wouldn't have been THAT difficult to put together a tape or pop in to the studios. Ye know, if the Who and the Stones could be arsed to go on or send in a tape during this era, then Quo should have been on top of it as well. What did Rossi say back then, 'Art for art's sake, hits for f**ks sake'!! Sorry Hershie for jumping all over this thread about BTR but it just seems that Quo had little problem in NOT getting their promotion right over so much of their work. OK, rant over.

Do we know for sure that they definitely didn't produce a promo for the track? I'd suspect that the reason it appeared as audio for two successive weeks was because they wanted to feature it but presumably there was neither a promo available, nor the band free to appear in the studio. I imagine the same was the case for Mean Girl. That said, they didn't produce a promo video for very much prior to the run of nothing but them for half the decade. Caroline and Down Down both didn't have one. ROLD and onwards having a promo video could be a delayed response to realising the problems this caused with regards to promotion, or even embrassment at being number one for the first time and being represented by Pans People having a dance? I also suspect that the fact that Accident Prone never got so much as a promo appearance did it no favours despite one being produced; but then She Don't Fool Me even got into the studio. Who Gets The Love also got overlooked and didn't take off.

Who Gets The Love also got overlooked and didn't take off. I don't think Quo had anything to do with the release of Mean Girl. It was put out by PYE to cash in on the band's new found fame. They did the same with Gerdundula c/w Lakky Lady before Caroline came out as well, although it didn't chart. I remember at the time Francis being interviewed on the radio saying there was nothing the band could do about it but he wasn't that bothered. Probably because it was all publicity and free at that. Vertigo didn't seem to care either. I think the first time the old PYE stuff became an official collaboration was with the Just For The Record album in 1979. They gave away a flexi single of In My Chair at the gigs that year. Quo were between albums having released .... Heat about 9 months previously. I actually agree that the absence of Accident Prone from TOTP is quite strange when you look at the grand scheme of things. It was also ironically (for me anyway) the best video they ever made!
