Zep also do it in the rock'n'roll section of Whole Lotta Love on the How The West Was Won album.

Often wondered where Alan was when they were shooting that video? Cheers The answer to that is the same as what is mentioned by Rick during this Q&A: -

Probably in Australia. I actually prefer the Aquostic version, I think, which is a rare case for me. I don't really like Pete's flabby drum sound or the Emulator on the original recording. I mean it's not bad but it sounds like going through the motions, which I guess they were... Same here, the Aquostic version rolls along well and a bit more natural/organic so to speak. Less tinkering on the accordion compared to some other Aquostic stuff which helps I think. Though the '83 version has its merits certainly in the crunch and punch of the guitars and Rossi is in good form on vocals. Quite liked the false ending as well! Just a little unexciting overall? The whole 'Back To Back' album was in tune with the times in terms of being effects laden. Possibly Tim Summerhayes and his engineer's remit had been to create an album for the 80s generation, gated reverbs on the drums etc for starters. The early-mid 80s, when the TOTP audiences danced, clapped enthusiastically and loudly all the way through the songs, from start to finish. Hard to clearly distinguish the snare/drums in the whoops choruses from the hand clapping in the TOTP studio performance of A Mess Of Blues.

MOTB is almost a comic song as done by Elvis, despite the sad lyrics. Quo seemed to have missed this angle ... it's one of their flattest tracks to me. (Not in the same limp leage as Not At All, though.)

MOTB is almost a comic song as done by Elvis, despite the sad lyrics. Quo seemed to have missed this angle ... it's one of their flattest tracks to me. (Not in the same limp leage as Not At All, though.) Good description! Flat, very robotic, no dynamics, no feel.
I suppose it was the inevitable taming of the sound through production, or over-production.
From RAOTW onwards, it seems that they started to give a fvck, and seemingly overnight became very precious about the production. Sure, the songs continued to have merit, there were a lot of interesting sounds and ideas in there, but they lost the soul.
Whatever the soul of SQ was, however you might describe it, it never came back after that. They didn't give a fvck before, just went for it, and lost it when they started to give one.
Of course they could have continued in their usual way after BFY, why not? At least 50% of the RAOTW album could have had the same balls out, gutsy, raucous performance-based production - the songs would still have been the same.
I suppose they were over zealous after their huge success in Europe.

I'm not even 100% sure if Rick is singing on Mess Of Blues. I'm pretty sure it's just Bernie and Rossi, like the majority of the songs on B2B, aside from the ones that have lead vocals done by Rick or Alan.

The only thing that saves it from Pete’s godawful feel-less drumming and Rossi’s half arsed American drivel is some neat tinkering by Andy.

Never a favourite of mine. It did seem all a bit 'by numbers' as already said. But they were all over the place at that time. Releasing The Wanderer about a year later didn't exactly cover them in glory either. Having said all that, I do like the treatment they give it on Aquostic II. So much better and so much more true to the feel of the original. And no matter what we think of the album that spawned this 1983 version (and I don't like it at all), it gave them 4 hit singles. All of them average to poor in my book. But just goes to show what I know.
