Ah, so that's the name for the little riff in the drone I mentioned for the 1992 tour, which appeared on the Live Alive Quo VHS also. Didn't know it was Cockles and Mussels. That possibly was either Andy or Pip doing it on a synth It was a little pun on the song : In Dublin's fair city Where the girls are so pretty I first set my eyes on sweet Molly Malone As she wheeled her wheelbarrow Through the streets broad and narrow Crying "cockles and mussels, alive, alive, oh" Alive, alive, oh Alive, alive, oh Crying "cockles and mussels, alive, alive, oh" I managed to isolate "ish" the riff recently, as I was recreating the VHS edit of the LAQ gig using the BBC Broadcast. If I had a really good transfer copy of the LAQ VHS, it would be no issue getting a really good isolated version of the Cockles and Mussels bit. However, it will more than likely still exist on a stage tape reel somewhere in the archives.

There's an entirely unused Drone from 1986 in the key of C.
Possibly to be used as an end of gig drone, or Whatever You Want wasn't the original choice for the set opener.

Red Sky wouldn't surprise me, considering they ended up jamming bits of it during the encore towards the end of the UK tour

Cockles and Mussels intro.. I knew i had it somewhere.. Another tour, didnt they use a piece of classic music as the intro ? The classical music intro had been Prokofiev's 'Dance Of The Nights'. Quoincidence has it listed in this thread as having been used, on and off, in 1997-98. Which makes sense as have a memory of hearing it at the gigs when Paul Rodgers had been support.

It would be a surprise if it was considered to be played on the tour, even more surprise if is the first song, considering it wasn't a hit (well, at least wasn't on the same league between Rollin' Home and In the army).

True, but don't forget, Ain't Complaining was penned for the Complaining Tour setlist before the band dropped it. Both reached 19, but Red Sky spent longer in the charts than Complaining. Tbh, the unused drone is boring (as far as drones go ) and I genuinely don't see it being an atmosphere builder like any of the other drones they have used.

Updated the list. Will add previews for drones as and when I can.

Recently saw the current 10cc in Oz - they have a stage intro with a song by Godley/Gouldman that is a clever biography of the band. Works well as an atmosphere builder at concert volume.
Imagine a Quo version.....would go on and on and on...

That was class, that.. With the lighting rig being hoisted from the stage, lights going - all that malarkey.. Such a pity there's no footage out there of that. Never even heard a bootleg of it!

Apologies for dredging up an old thread... Turns out that this drone isn't unused. It was used during the "Never Say Never" tour prior to the encore - which I find odd as the encore opened with In The Army Now... 2 completely different keys. Not sure how long it was used for, but I have heard two recordings now, and it's present on both.

Was there one with what sounded like chopper blades through the drone , maybe late 80's early 90's

My very first Quo gig at Brid spa in December 97 and still have memories of the intro as well as a storming gig.

Was there one with what sounded like chopper blades through the drone , maybe late 80's early 90's Yes, certainly during the Ain’t Complaining Tour. I think I’m right in saying they opened with Whatever You Want? Also had the words “Turn it up, let’s hear it… for here is the crunch…” Wasn’t until years later I realised it was a line from the film The Italian Job!
