Quo sadly have stuck to the same drone for a number of years now (excluding the FF reunions). I enjoyed the various ones used from around 1991 till 99/2000 ?? Nellie the Elephant was great, along with the tune from Pulp Fiction, but my fav was from the 92 tour when it was 'cockles and mussells', I have tried searching yootub for the same version with no luck, and the live uploads from that tour cut it very short. So Mr Luke QI - you surely know the source ?

1986;- Drone (D)* - Used to open the show very early on during 1986 (Quo's Back Tour) Drone (D)** - Used to open the show. Used again at the Butlins Minehead 1990 & Sutton Park 1992 shows, and was last used during the 1997 / 98 (Whatever You Want; HITS Tour).
1989;- Drone (F) - First appearance of the modern day drone featuring the Pictures Of Matchstick Men riff.
Drone (D) - 1986 drone "remixed" and included excerpts from the movie The Italian Job. "Let's hear it, turn it up" - "Here is the crunch". Used up until 1990.
1990;- Drone (B) - Alternate version of the 1989 drone in the key of B. Used up until Mid 1991 (Rocking All Over The Years Tour). Last used in 2003 (Riffs Tour), before the setlist reverted back to the usual set at the time.
1991;- Stage Tape Intro - Rock 'til You Drop. Used to open the show during the 1991 / 92 tour. Drone (D) - New instrumental piece used up until 1996 / 1997 (Can't Stop Tour). Andy would play some string bits over the top of this.
1992;- Drone (F) - The "Cockles & Mussels" drone first appeared in the key of D on the Live Alive Quo VHS release.
1993;- Stage Tape Intro - Nellie The Elephant. Used during 1993 / 94 (Just For The Record Tour)

Wasn't some or all of the dialogue/sounds of Drone (D) from 1989 from The Italian Job featuring Michael Caine, and preceded WYW for a while?

Just checked the script and all of the dialogue is from the movie. "Let's hear it. Turn It Up... Here is the crunch". Def Leppard were doing a similar thing at the time using the Dirty Harry Dialogue as the opener on the Hysteria Tour.

Cockles and Mussels (alive alive-o) was used on the Live Alive Quo tour. It's one of the few 'drones' apart from the present one and the Heavy Traffic tour that I can remember. Around 1986 the drone also incorporated a very small snippet from Heartburn. Or my memory tells me it does. Not always a reliable source

However, heartburn would have worked great as an opener

Couldn't begin to tell you which year. But late 80's most likely. But maybe it was the pasta and chorizo before the gig I probably confused myself and misheard it. Actually, I haven't listened to that song in ages. I may dabble

Cockles and Mussels intro.. I knew i had it somewhere.. Another tour, didnt they use a piece of classic music as the intro ? Ah, so that's the name for the little riff in the drone I mentioned for the 1992 tour, which appeared on the Live Alive Quo VHS also. Didn't know it was Cockles and Mussels. That possibly was either Andy or Pip doing it on a synth
