I think it is a bit unclear exactly when Andy became a permanent member of the band. Some use to say in 1977 as he has played on every record since RAOTW and that he couldn't be credited as a band member because of a contract with another record company. But I wonder if it was clear for You, who were around at the time, that Andy was a permanent band member, or did it come as a chock in 1982 that he had been a member in five years? If he couldn't be credited as a member on the cover and didn't appear on any photos, was it OK to say officially that he was a part of the band? Maybe it was just an afterthought?
RAOTW:No band members were credited. Andy is listed as a session musician. A picture of FF on the inner sleeve and a live picture of FF on the rear. IYCSTH: No band members were credited. Andy is listed with the session musicians. The other four band members is represented by individual photos. WYW: No band members were credited. Andy is listed with the session musicians. Picture of FF on the inner sleeve. JS: No band members were credited. Andy is listed with the session musicians. Individual photos of FF on the rear. NTL: No band members were credited. Andy is listed with the session musicians. Picture of FF on the rear. 1+9+8+2: All band members including Andy is credited on the inner sleeve. Picture including Andy and Pete on the rear.

He didn't officially join until 1982 when his contract with EMI ended. Prior to that he was simply "on loan" to Quo... 2 different artists under 2 different record labels

That's the way I think of it as well. But for example the official website claims that he joined 1977.

And even if it was a loan. Was he considered as a full time member by the band? Or by the fans? Did the fans know he was on loan as a member, not just a session musician?

He wouldnt have bee able to sign a contract or join a band working under another label, and I'm not entirely sure what he was contracted to whilst with EMI. Fans possibly considered him a session musician tbh. Strange thing is, he was touring with the band in '76 before the RAOTW album had been released, but they claim he was only brought into touring with the band during the Rockin tour so they could do songs from the album.

Never considered someone who wrote songs and one of their biggest hits a session musician. Also played on stage. However the band was still promoted largely as a four piece. It’s not like Genesis when there was only 3 recognised members as those who played for years live didnt write any material. Its almost like the when’s a door not a door.

"Drummer Pete Kircher and keyboardist Andy Bown were pragmatic about the band ending. They were session guys who hadn't been there at the beginning" (FR on the 'end' of thr band in 1984) "He (Andy) played as a session musician on the Rockin' All Over The World album and would officially become a full-time member of the band in 1982" Both quotes from Francis Rossi's 'I Talk Too Much'.

Bob Young also matches these criteria, should he be considered as a official member of the band? Bernie Frost? Frost played with Status Quo...when was that ? Bobs never been classed as a member. I don’t think adding gob iron live on a few tracks makes you a band member. But some bands include members who solely write but don’t perform live with the band.

It wouldn’t surprise if the only official band members are Andy, Rhino and Francis. Maybe even Rick in terms of ownership.

Yes but officially joined in 82 Cheers The question from the original poster is “when did Andy become a full time member of the band”? From 1977 he was included on tour, in promo video’s and on tv show appearances, so he was full time with the band in 1977. he may have “officially” joined in 1982, but he was already full time with the band way before then.

Full time WITH the band is not the same as a full time MEMBER.
