My turn. There are many different views here, and that's fine. Myself I'm firmly FF (didn't even know the term before I joined the other board.) I like some of Quo Lite's stuff, Heavy Traffic, In Search of the Fourth Chord and parts of Rock 'Til You Drop and Under the Influence. Francis and Quo will Always get criticised by some of us, no matter what they do, and that's fine too. Some of us think that the real Quo stopped in 76. Some might argue they stopped when John was ousted. (Yes, he didn't go himself, he just wanted a break.) I've Always thought Quo ended with Back to Back. How could I think differently, the first time I saw them was on their farewell tour in England, with Pete Kircher on the drum stool. But my relation with Quo was already troubled: I was no fan of their 1+9+8+2 album and Back to Back would be even worse. Instead there were so many great bands at the time (Maiden, Rainbow, Priest, Motörhead, ACDC et all) that I no longer cared for Quo.
When my brother copied part of the Heavy Traffic album for me so many years later, I was mildly impressed by those songs. Especially Solid Gold was a song that wouldn't have looked out of place on any FF album. So we went to see them on that tour and had a good night. But was that band Quo to me? No, they weren't. And it has remained like this: when the band produce a new cd I may listen to it, might even buy it if I like it, but they are a different band now. I may like some of their output, I will never love it though.
So the 2 new songs sound good, I think there may be a good cd coming, because Francis now finally sees what the fans want, inspite of his own musical tastes: a rock album, go out with a bang.
I can only hope he puts his everything into the solos, as I like guitars and his style. I also hope he invites Bob for some harmonica, as I'm very partial to that too. Furthermore I hope he asks John Eden to produce it, as Francis really hasn't got a clue about how the Quo sound should er... sound.
Would I go and see them again? Certainly. There is a condition though, it's a rather big ask I'm afraid: I'd love to see them performing their own songs, so starting from In the Army Now to Backbone (was that the title?).
And when DID the real Quo end? They ended with Never Too Late. (according to the gospel of Charles)
So there.
