So having discussed this today, it would appear that these "rehearsals" are actually Quo setting up at Montserrat Air Studios.
It's well known the band liked to have a bit of "fun" whilst at the Air Studios which can be heard on the "Rehearsal Tapes", as namely 2 band members are under the influence, Rossi and Rick.
And if you think about it, Quo wouldn't go into a rehearsal session wasting a good 60 minutes jamming songs that aren't in the set, and I doubt they'd have either Stay The Night or Marguerita Time down in early '82.

Not to worry. They can correct the error in ten years time on the re-re-re-release.

I thought they recorded 1+9+8+2 in Montreux (in '82), and BTB in Montserrat in '83?

Was it 1982 or 1983 Quo went to Montserrat? Quo went to Montserrat late '82 through to early '83 to record Back To Back

There was someone on one of the Quo FB pages earlier who swears he saw JC still drumming with Quo in early '82.
Not right, surely?

I highly doubt it, unless they have proof... which they probably wont Quo will have left for Montreux Studios late '81 to have the album finished ready for the release in mid April of 1982... John will have been well out of the band by then. Possibly the first week or so they was in Montreux. Like the Army album... Quo hit the studios in September '85 and the album was finished by Feb '86 Cheers

I'm confused by this as I used to have an interview that Rossi and Parfitt did in early 1983 were they said something about hoping to record a new album later that year, if that's the case then the rehearsal tapes must be from sometime in '83?

it's one of many boots wrongly titled... I've had a Quo boot for years labelled as Nottingham 1975 when in fact it's Newcastle as Quo never played Nottingham. Quo would never go into rehearsal, especially with a new drummer, under the influence and waste the full session playing songs that aren't in the set, and that aren't theirs Cheers

Quo stopped touring in June 1981 and didn't begin again till April 1982. In the meantime they went to wherever it was they went, to record, and John left rather suddenly. The circumstances in which he left (sudden, ushered out, never got the job back) suggests that he probably wouldn't even be playing informal sessions with any of the other bandmembers, though such are not unknown. It appears not be documented, if so.
Much more likely is a memory mix up. Confusing places and dates is as human as having hands, feet and beer. Sometimes I think we are wired up for it.
This matters (slightly) to me as John's leaving came within my "paying attention time", which began around the time I tried to get tickets for the 1981 tour and found I couldn't. Then John left. I was disappointed, as he had been with the band from the start, but then, bands are like that. By the time they started touring, Pete was well in place.

It's not such an egregious mistake IMO. After all the information was incorrect on many sites / sources, and the release doesn't even specify anything other than "rehearsal tapes". Given that the 2nd CD of BTB is rather full already (though sadly incomplete) and chronologically it's still recorded after 1982, I see no real reason for a complaint. Other than, of course, if you think the rehearsals/jams shouldn't have been released at all - which I can understand.
