Now here's my very rough calculation based on this thread, plus the other best of 86-16 threads
I think Quo have done 10 studio albums of original material since 86.
Each of the four songwriters, based on these threads, can muster a good album comprising of what they've written.
That's four good albums, and six bad ones. On another day I might say 3 good albums.
That's an overall rating of 30/40% good music. Leaving about 60/70% crap
If that's about right, it's not actually that bad a record really. Most music doesn't stand the test of time....so the fact that I think (after all this time) that 35% of Quo output from 86-16 is good music...is a better return that many bands would muster.
Of course, it's a terrible, terrible return compared to the lasting greatness of most of the 70's material....but then no other band can touch Quo's classic run of albums from 70-76. They were perfect, and could do no wrong

If I’m generous and use the criteria of a songs ok to me.
I come up with a total of 22 songs and that’s being very generous. Or as you put it 20%.
For other bands in the same period for example. For example. Deep Purple 60% Iron Maiden 75% Guns n Roses 50% although the sample size is much smaller Metallica 85%
Put even on your figure of 40% I can’t name a band I like who who have such a low figure. And that’s with me being generous. As for the 70-76 I don’t think they’re perfect or the best there has been they are just their best and special to me.

But but but.... the 70's output were 60-70 percent sh*t according to a certain lead geetar player? So... in his mind, they remain status quo... (clever, eh?)

“Nothing Comes Easy” is just sublime. Fantastic track. It's horseshit. Stop being a twat. Superb track. Not typical Quo granted; but nevertheless......

I think there's a few fair comparisons between Quo/Maiden and Metallica. As a Quo fan, I envy that they have not embarassed their audience. But quality? Like Quo, I've enjoyed listening to new maiden and metallica albums since the early 90's. Then (like new Quo albums) I've put them away. They are nowhere near as good as the 80's, nowhere near. Maiden have become very hard work to listen to, very long. There's a few exceptional songs on each album. Eg I loved Death Magnetic when it came out, loving the return of the old sound. But there's only Cyanide I still really rate now. I can take or leave the rest. Have Metallica recorded a single song since the black album that would be fit to feature on Master of Puppets? I do respect Maiden for progressing and changing (without embarassing the fans), but god, Somewhere in Time utterly pisses over anything that came after it. Perhaps I'm wrong saying 40% isn't so bad, I dunno. But yes you are generous, much more generous than me in your assessment of those other bands. I can only really think of Motorhead who kept the quality up over hte last 30 years. AC/DC would probably have a ratio similar to Quo, albeit without the terrible stunts and embarassing songs this fanbase suffered along the way

It’s rather damning when a bands output is below 50 percent ok. Ok is like it’s alright. Since the Black album. Well there isn’t a song on there that would be as good as MOP. I will put it differently. For me you could together a great album from Metallica post the Black album from the other albums. An album as good as anything after And Justice. Post Alan could you get an album as good as even Rocking all over the world? Or Just supposing? When you say you listen to music then not return to it, I’m the same. I have something like 10000 albums maybe more. So as I say often these days I do like it but there’s other music I’d rather listen to. Like Quo 8 only listen to the albums I love these days. So nothing post 81. Like Rick’s. It’s canny. But I will probably never listen to it again.

The very best of Maiden or Metallica since 1990 would be much better music than Quo's best from the same period.
