There is real anger that there will be no "official" tribute gig with the SQ band machinary behind it. I'm not angry about it for three reasons:
1. Rick had already quit Quo before his death, his relationship with Francis clearly in tatters. People expect too much from Francis in this situation imo. If it got (as it seems) to the point of them really not liking each other, how much "tribute" to the other can be reasonably expected? He'd be panned for lack of sincerity. He can't win. He has said he wasn't ready for it, and it's clearly difficult for him. 2. It was reasonable of the fans to expect SQ to organise something, I think I recall S Porter saying something of the like shortly after Rick's death. But I think the fans have made an error in thinking that a tribute gig relies upon support from SQ and cannot happen without it. 3. There's no reason why a tribute gig cannot be organised. If , for example, his son and JCQuo were behind it, it would be "official".
Ok, Rick isn't Freddie Mercury as far as the public are concerned. So I'm not talking Wembley and live TV, but we could fill Hammersmith.
Which musicians could be asked to support? For a start there's the ones who helped with Rick's album. Ginger Wildheart. I'm sure Bob would be involved. With JCQuo as a backing band and with guests on different songs...a Rick only set....it could be a magic night.
Let's start organising it!

I think the convention last year was a great Rick tribute. But, another one wouldn't hurt, would love to hear the PLC tracks live at a Rick tribute.

In the immediate aftermath of his death, Status Quo said that there would be a tribute concert for Rick.
Why would they go public in saying that if there was no intention of doing one?
Clearly it's not going to happen now, and it would seem that the best they could do was to play Little Lady and Don't Drive My Car.
For me, the real tribute happened at Butlins.

And without taking sides. Any tribute gig without both Alan and Francis would be hollow. And it appears they couldn’t bring themselves to appear together. Francis and Rick jr have issues. So a tribute gig just won’t happen. Its a shame. For example I really enjoyed the Jon Lord tribute concert.

In one way I'm glad that a Quo-endorsed tribute gig hasn't taken place, but in another, I feel sorry for the fans who are incomplete without it and have been lied to.
Given the derogatory remarks Francis has made about Rick since his death and the complete disinterest shown by Porter to promote Rick's solo album - until, funnily enough, Quo could get a bit of publicity out of it - I'm glad that both individuals won't be involved.
Hopefully, the various session members won't either. After all, they LAUGHED when they heard Rick was working on his solo album.
Make it a friends and fans only event so Quo don't get an invite.

The friends and fans event happened at Butlins. Alan, Spud, Bob, Rick Jnr, and a small selection of the Quo Army.
I actually think they would struggle to promote any kind of official tribute show, despite the fact that it's coming up to 18 months, and too late to do anything now...
I'm not sure who would go to it? The hardcore Quo fans that turned out for the FF gigs, were fans of the old band Status Quo.
What has happened since 1986 is the gradual deterioration of that fanbase, so you're left with a diminished hardcore of old fans, and then we've had the rise of 'new' hardcore fans, who have only ever know the band with Rhino in it, and then we have all the rest of the general punters who make up the majority of Quo fans these days.
That hardcore number of Quo fans of old was enough to buy Rick's album and make it go Top 10 in the week of release, but then it immediately dropped out the charts in the following week, because there isn't a large enough hardcore fanbase to sustain it.
Compare that to how well Aquostic I sold, and sold, and kept on selling - being bought by people who had perhaps never bought a Quo record in their life, but they liked having a greatest hits played on acoustic guitars.
I'll be very interested to see what happens when Quo release their new album next year. I suspect it will chart for one week and then drop out again.

I mentioned it before in a different thread and got criticism for it but I’ll suggest it again.
I have absolutely no intention of seeing the current Quo line up live. To me it’s so far removed from what I loved.
However; if anyone chose to go and see them and Francis stood, centre stage, and said “this is a track from Rick’s solo album, a track called Lonesome Road” then I’d respect that as some sort of tribute.
I know it won’t happen and if anyone suggests again that it’s a shite idea then so be it.
I just think it’d be a nice touch.

That's a great idea, but it's not going to happen is it?
Because Francis is stuck in his 'Eagles Concert' mindframe, where he thinks the whole set has to be full of songs that people want to hear.
I really enjoyed his solo shows, because he could let loose and play something different.
I'm sure that Richie would love to have a crack at Big Fat Mama, but I'd be very surprised if that ever happens.

Two original members of the band barely on speaking terms, two ex wives both with their own agendas, one utterly shameless and profit driven manager, no major record label support, a factionalised fanbase, the only people really putting Rick first being RPJ, Marietta and Andy - it was never going to happen was it?

Perhaps the tribute will be in the form of the next tour gimmick : Francis touring with holographic Rick!

Perhaps the tribute will be in the form of the next tour gimmick : Francis touring with holographic Rick! You're close. I think they'll have Malone dress up with a Rick wig and dub in Rick's voice on the songs he usually sang. It's clear that Edwards' croaking ain't getting it done on those.

From what I've seen Rhino is doing quite a good job on songs that don't have many notes in them (eg Rain) and not so much (or at all ... ) on songs that need a bit of range (eg BFM.) He certainly seems to be more in tune than he was a few years ago.
