I read today a comment similar to this about Rick’s song from the radio yesterday.
I have to agree it surely wouldn’t have made any album 70-81. It’s not even as good as lesser 70s songs such as Baby boy or For you. But there again they haven’t written anything after 81 that is as good as those songs.
Between 70 and 76. They recorded great albums. And very good ones from 77-81. The Heat and Rockin being the weakest to me.
They for me didn’t write a great song at all after 81. Not one member of the band. Since 85 you could make an ep of decent songs. And not a long one.
Its pointless comparing classic Quo to post 81 Status Quo. It’s simply inferior. I read it was the drugs. So what’s there excuse since they cleaned up. Slow songs have never been Quos best type of song. Although they’ve wrote some great ones.
Is any one expecting Rick to have suddenly recorded an album as good as the 70s... well only a fool would. Look at his writing 85 to 2014. How many good songs never mind great ones. How many by Francis or anyone else.
Some people get a kick out of trying to upset people. Trying to prove they are loyal to Francis and whatever lineup he now has. But I guess nothings changed. Been like that since 85.

The song's ok, imo, & in the '70s it would have emerged with a quite different arrangement - especially in the classic '70-'76 era.

I wouldn't expect any rock star of the 70's to be writing equally good material in subsequent decades. I appreciate PF that you only think there's a few good songs post 86 from the whole band. For me there's loads, albeit none top drawer. There's only really Solid Gold that hits the spot like much of the classic stuff does, and that of course is rossi/young.
Rick has written plenty of good songs since 86 Yeah the madness, somehow unfinished but defo of quality. Man overboard, all that money, heavy daze, good sign, ballavista man, alright
I've not seen anyone talk in terms of expecting Rick's solo album to be as good as the 70's - although I'm sure most of us lot will get great pleasure from the recordings regardless

It's not a Quo song and it won't be a Quo album. There's no point in comparing it with his Quo work of the 70's....

The only ones saying it wouldn't be any good in the 70s are those who think we "FF only fans" should naturally hate this track given we have lambasted Francis for his pop material, the likes of Restless and Sorry, etc.
Trying to force an agenda as usual.
The reason I don't like Restless, Sorry or most of what the band have produced since the 70s is because it's devoid of feeling and Francis hasn't got the voice for a lot of the ballady stuff.

Although, he sings SSMH, A Year etc all brilliantly. TCTTG was a massively missed opportunity. Rick's vocal should have been left alone on that track! As good as it is, it would have been twice the track!

This thread reminds me of a point often made by Francis and Rick about his employment in the band - for his singing voice. And as they hadn't found their rock style back in '67, they must have meant his ability to sing ballads.
Yep, would have loved to heard him sing TCTTG.
He sings Everything too doesn't he, which is a song I loved as a teenager.
I think Francis' voice works on some ballads but not all.
I would have been interested to hear Rick sing Fran's song, One Step at a Time before his voice got wrecked. He's have probably made that song.
