Good honest little interview. The guy has certainly worked hard to get where he is today.I always got the impression that he and Rick were good pals, they did write some decent tunes between them. What he says about him at the reunion gigs is testament to that. He is allowed his opinion, what he said about John was personal and a dum move, but in terms of his view on possible new materail,I have no problem with that, that's just his say.I happen to agree with him somewhat. Also,if he really didn't care about the reaction of message boards,he wouldn't have even mentioned them...cheeky. Peace Which gig have you got tickets for? Hey Freewilly,I have no intrest in current band.Haven't for years now, last time I saw the band was as the frantic four.Prior to that was in the mid 90's. Just putting my view across man. Hope that clears things up.

To say the Frantic 4 at Hammersmith was a "fucking appalling mess" is actually downright dishonest. He didn't actually say that - he said 'MUSICALLY it was an appalling mess', and it was. I was there and it was all over the place. He also said the atmosphere and reaction of the crowd was fantastic - last time I checked that's a compliment.
As a musician, I can tell you're just backing up what someone you look up to is saying
All over the place means they were out of time, out of synch, out of tune, out of key, playing different things at the same time. Having attended various gigs on the tour, I can tell you that wasn't the case and it's a case of you thinking "Well, Francis and Rhino say it so, it must be true!"
Sure, there were mistakes yes. But, all over the place?
1. You're having a laugh. 2. I highly doubt you thought it was all over the place if he hadn't of said so, otherwise you would have walked out and been on here, or one of the other forums, going apeshit and demanding a refund.

There is a tone to his comments that smack me as arrogant and bitter. Hypocritical of me to say so because of Alan? Maybe so but, he has every right to be bitter after what was done to him and his family.
What he said about the fans....Would he say that when he's going to plug his next solo album or show? As for John?.....Very stupid move

'Appalling mess' is in the eye of the beholder can I suggest...I was there too, I certainly didn't think 'appalling mess'. Compliment? Certainly in a passive/aggressive way. The band were shit but the crowd were well up for it? Bollocks. I'll take that mess over another 'tight' rendition of The Oriental any day.

As just one of the many thousands of people who took to Quos songs on the radio then into seeing them live back in the 70s ... a band that rocked very loud and live better than any other I thought they were magnificent on both reunion tours... and I only had the pleasure of seeing them on DVD. I was especially proud of Alan’s stoic performance. Never forget he was the one who started Quo.

And to support this view from 4th Chord, as a fan who saw them in their younger days, this was my fear. That it would be an appalling mess. But to my relief, it wasn't. I would have said if I thought it was. Instead I got goosebumps, as I heard those very familiar tunes. I didn't go to 100s of gigs, I think only about 10 or less. But this was the sound I remembered and it was still there. It was exciting, thrilling. The band made me feel that. I didn't cheer simply because of seeing them again. It was real. For me at least. And when I first heard a live gig of the CQ, via the Radio 2 concert in 2011, to promote QPQ, I didn't get goosebumps. And I thought maybe I'd gone off Quo. It wasn't there. That to me speaks volumes about what I enjoyed about their sound.

It was messy for sure.
But Rhino's exaggerated that ten-fold by tacking the word "apalling" on the front.
It's one of those choices-of-wording we make in a split-second based on how passionately we're feeling at the time.
He could have called it a "f*****g mess", a "glorious mess", a "little bit of a mess" or "understandably quite messy".
But he's gone for maximum effect. Probably in part to wind-up, and more to defend his belief that CQ are the best, most slick, and technically gifted incarnation of Quo thus far, something he's passionately proud of to the detrement of his own humility.
To pitch himself and the band as much superior to the predecessors and creators of Quo is a massive ego-stroke indeed and obviously one that he very much needs to have.
I wouldn't say it's so much to do with CQ's tenuous status, more like the accumulation of 30 odd years of living in the shadow of the FF, whether he realizes that fully or not. But he's a motormouth, so it's often the case that 30 years of whatever 'feeling' is going to come out in one interview/soundbyte and inevitably cause offence. He can't help it.
Unfortunately it's a no-win situation for us because the more we protest, the less likely he will be to pipe down in the future.

I'm not sure there's any need for clarification on that point, clearly he was talking musically and by doing so he is intending to insult AL and JC for their performances which is absolutely pathetic. I was there also and I've got the CD , to call it a fucking appalling mess is just ridiculous, and an out and out lie as the newspaper reviews as the time demonstrate.

Hardly a compliment when he said the fans would have went ballistic if the band got their d***s out.

Wonder if he'd get the same reaction if he went back to Dexy's

He is approachable. He carries gear. He can't sing. He has zero charisma. He likes to have a laugh. He swears a lot. He doesn't like to work (hates rehearsals). He likes to have a drink.
The man is a f*cking roadie.

I saw this thread yesterday but as I was away, didn't get chance to read the interview and comments fully or comment myself. Initially I could see it was going to stir up a lot of bad feeling and it has. I like Rhino. I have liked reading his tour logs... I like his sense of humour and his humility when he acknowledged he would always be a substitute for Alan. I never blamed him that he was there instead, it wasn't his fault and he did get a lot of unwarranted stick. I tried to defend him before when he made the same 'appalling' comment to describe the FF in 2013. I thought that some pounced on the first part of the statement, taking it out of the important context of the second part. I felt it was a pythonesque attempt at juxtaposition, intentionally using the extreme word 'appalling' to describe the understandable musical mistakes, because it made the comparison of it being 'the best gig he had ever been to' more apparent. As gav said, in raising the shock aspect of his words, I think he was trying to be funny. But he has now said the same again with even more vehemence against his critics that seems to betray his own bitterness. I think he could have taken the opportunity to clarify his previous words (but maybe I was mistaken and he did mean it after all?) I actually enjoyed a lot of the interview especially his close friendship with Rick but I am disappointed in some of the comments that are insulting towards Alan, John and a lot of the Quo Army...

I was there too...appaling mess ? yea right...it was better then any gig I have seen from CQ between 1985 and 2014.
